LEARNING COMPETENCIES:

Writing a close analysis and critical interpretation of literary texts and doing an adaptation
of these require from the learner the ability to identify:
o the geographic, linguistic, and ethnic dimensions of Philippine literary history from
pre-colonial to the contemporary
o representative texts and authors from each region (e.g. engage in oral history
research with focus on key personalities from the students’ region/province/town

Compare and contrast the various 21st century literary genres and the ones from the earlier
genres/periods citing their elements, structures and traditions.

Discuss how different contexts enhance the text’s meaning and enrich the reader’s
understanding.

Produce a creative representation of a literary text by applying multimedia and ICT skills.

Do self- and/or peer-assessment of the creative adaptation of a literary text, based on
rationalized criteria, prior to presentation.

LESSON 1: Prose, Poetry, and Drama
Your Objectives:
 Know the divisions of poetry, prose and drama
 Differentiate poetry, prose and drama and its divisions and types;
 Classify fiction and nonfiction

INST RUCTION DELIVERY
Poetry refers to those expressions in the verse, with measures, rhymes, lines, stanzas
and melodious tone.
DIVISIONS AND TYPES OF POETRY
Lyric- it is meant to be sung to the accompaniment of a musical instrument known as the
lyre.
o Song- this is a short lyric poem which has specific melodious quality and is
intended to be sung and can be set easily to music.
o Elegy- it is a poem expressing lament or grief for the dead.
Narrative poetry-it tells a story following an order of events.
o Ballad- it is a short and simple narrative poem composed to be sung, and is
orally told from one generation to another.
o Epic- this is a long, majestic narrative poem which tells the adventures of a
traditional hero and the development of a nation.
Dramatic Poetry- it has elements that are closely related to drama because it is written
in dramatic form or makes use of a dramatic technique.
o Dramatic Monologue- this is a combination of drama and poetry which
presents the speech of a character in a particular situation at a critical
moment.
o Soliloquy- this is a passage spoken by the speaker in a poem or by a
character in a play except that there is no one present to hear him except
the reader and the audience.
PROSE
Fiction-series of imagined facts which illustrates truths about human life
o Short story- brief, artistic form of prose fiction which is centered on a single
main incident and is intended to produce a single dominant impression
which maybe sadness, surprise, sympathy, terror or other reactions.
o Novel- extensive form of prose. Its length extend to hundreds of pages.
Nonfiction- literary works that are based mainly on fact rather than on the imagination,
although they may contain fictional elements.
o Essay- it is a prose composition of moderate length, usually expository in
nature, which aims to explain an idea, theory impression or point of view.
o Formal essay-serious and important topics such as philosophy,
theology, science, politics, morality and others.
o Informal- it may deal with any subject, even the ordinary and
commonplace. While formal essay is objective, informal essay may
be subjective.
o Critical Essay seeks to analyze and evaluate a literary work
o Biographical essay- deals with personal life and achievements of an
individual
o Essay of travel- informs and entertains by its personal treatment of
various experiences in a given place and time.
DRAMA- Greek word dran means to do.
It is the art of imitating human action or a story presented on stage by actors
impersonating characters in a given situation.
o Tragedy- it is the imitation of an action which is serious, complete,
and with certain magnitude.
o Comedy- is today and always has been, the most popular of the
dramatic forms. True comedy is really a serious and full of deep
meaning, yet it is infused with wit, sparkle, delicate satire and new
ideas.
