RATIONALE:
The City Government of Cagayan de Oro, through the City Agriculture Office-Fisheries Division, is
tasked with emphasizing the importance of conservation, protection, and sustainable management
of Philippine coastal and marine resources within the 11,115 hectares Municipal Waters of the
City, as mandated by Presidential Proclamation No. 57 issued in 1999, also known as "The Month
of the Ocean."
The ocean covers more than 70% of the earth's surface. It is our source of life, sustaining mankind
and all other organisms on the planet. With 90 percent of large fish populations decimated and 50
percent of coral reefs gone, we are depleting the ocean faster than it can be restored. To conserve
and maintain the ocean and everything it supports, we must strike a new balance based on a
genuine understanding of the ocean and how civilization interacts with it. We must create a
connection to the ocean that is inclusive, innovative, and guided by historical lessons. The goal of
the Day is to educate the public about the impact of human actions on the ocean, to build a global
movement of citizens for the ocean, and to mobilize and unite the world's population behind a
project to ensure the long-term management of the world's oceans.
This activity will span for 1 day which will include lectures, interactions with all involved sectorss
and empowering activities for all 12 coastal barangays. Partners, both local and national will be
invited as resource such as City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO), City
Planning and Development Office (CPDO), Department of Environment and Natural Resources
(DENR)-Region 10 and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-Region 10.
