CHAPTER I
Background of the Study
Unemployment is a serious issue for any economy. It creates negative effects to
unemployed as they are jobless and suffer from worse prospects to find new job and
those who are employed feel less secure to keep their jobs in future
Unemployment today is considered as one of the most social issue here in the
Philippines. This phenomenon is increasing as the years goes by, whereas, there are
13.5 million unemployed Filipinos recorded in the first quarter of 2021 according to the
National Social Weather Survey of June 23-26, 2021. It is expected that the numbers
might goes up since we are experiencing a pandemic. (Simpson, 2020)
In a country with almost 100 million people living in the Philippines, having 9.1 million
unemployed citizens is a huge problem. According to the latest Social Weather Stations
(SWS) survey, 21.4 percent of the population declares themself unemployed. The
unemployed Filipinos are considered unemployed based on two criteria, either they
don’t have a job, or they are currently looking for a job, except for the housewives,
students, retired workers, and disabled people who are considered to be part of the
labor force. (Urrutia, 2017)
Unemployment has costs to a society that are more than just financial. Unemployed
individuals not only lose income but also face challenges to their physical and mental
health. Societal costs of high unemployment include higher crime and a reduced rate of
volunteerism.Unemployed individuals not only lose income but also face challenges to
their physical and mental health. (Walters, 2020)
