*Keep it flexible and remember essay writing is an art

Introduction of Your Argument
○ Hook: A creative, engaging statement in your own voice that connects to the text and/or your
argument and/or a ‘core human experience’ (a metaphor, anecdote, a meaningful quote from outside
the text, etc.)
○ Link: (use what is needed)
■ Introduce text & creator
■ Explain key interpretable concepts from the question
■ Exploration of the central issue(s)
■ Address issues around audience, context, purpose,
○ Thesis: A succinct explanation of how you will answer the question and what you will prove in the
body of your essay.
■ If you introduce an element in your thesis, it must be discussed in your body paragraphs.
■ (Min 1 sentence, more as needed).

Conclusion
○ Quickly summarize and reiterate your central argument and main points
○ Don’t introduce new ideas
○ Pontificate about how your topic connects to the ‘shared human experience’
○ Leave us with a ‘why you wrote this essay’

Formatting Notes:

Quoted language is in ‘single quotes’
Full title first, operative words after that (never just letters/acronyms)
For the author - both names first time, last name after that (never just first name)
Use keywords from the question throughout your writing
