Black Out Poetry A style of Found Poetry Black Out Poetry Theme: • The central message • What the author wants you to learn or know • A broad idea about life • Usually not stated. It must be inferred Mood: • The feeling or atmosphere the reader gets when reading the story or poem How music affects culture and culture affects music • Think of the music genres, songs, events and social situations in the decades we have learned about. • Choose a theme from one of the above. • You will write a found poem. The poem should show your theme and give a message concerning the music genre, song, event and/or social situation Now it’s your turn! 1. Choose one page. 2. Find an anchor word (This will be a word that is interesting to you and may be your topic). 3. In pencil, lightly underline or circle the words that you may want to use. *Be able to answer this question: What do you want the reader to understand or feel after having read your poem? 4. Use those words to form your blackout poetry. 5. Think of an image that would make the theme or mood stronger for the reader. Draw it in pencil. 6. Once you have your poem and image decided, colour your image if you want to. 7.
