Beth 123 Homeschool 4 Me Learning About a Human Cell Name: __________ © www.123homeschool4me.com Human Cell Your body is made up of hundreds of different types of cells. These cells are the most basic unit of life and are complex like a miniature city. The outside of the cell is called a cell membrane which gives the cell its shape and allows certain substances in and others out. It is the first level of protection for the cell. Inside the cell are smaller structures called organelles – “little organ” which each has a special job. All the organelles are floating around in a water/jelly like substance called cytoplasm. © www.123homeschool4me.com Nucleus Basically this is the “brains” or command center of the cell. The nucleus is the largest organelle in the cell. It is usually a big round ball and sometimes located in the center. It is surrounded by a think nuclear membrane that gives it shape and allows substances to go in and out. Inside the nucleus is DNA and RNA as well as nucleolus. The DNA contains all the information about you (genes) while the RNA copies the information and leaves the nucleus to make a protein. © www.123homeschool4me.com Mitochondria Each cell has several power plants, or mitochondria. These organelles are shaped like a bean with squiggly line in the center. The mitochondria digests food you eat and turns it into smaller nutrients that can be broken down into fuel (glucose). © www.123homeschool4me.com Lysosome Lysosome protect the city by destroying invaders (like bacteria), break apart worn out organelles, and break down chemicals inside the cell. Lysosome are small balls; each cell has hundreds of them. So if you eat a big meal of meat and potatoes the lysosome will break down the protein (meat) and carbohydrate (potato) into smaller units so they can be readily used. © www.123homeschool4me.com Golgi The Golgi body looks like a stack of curved pancakes. The Golgi keep chemicals like proteins and fats that your cell makes and then sends it to whatever area of the cell needs that part. (like a delivery meal) © www.123homeschool4me.com Endoplasmic Reticulum The Endoplasmic Reticulum transports things around the cell (like a road) - taking chemicals from Golgi to other parts, sends waste to leave the cell. It looks like ribbons connected to other ribbons. © www.123homeschool4me.com Centrioles Centrioles are special organelles that help cells reproduce. Cells reproduce or copy themselves so you can grow up to become an adult or repair damaged cells. Centrioles look like two pieces of pasta that form an “L” shape. © www.123homeschool4me.com Ribosomes Ribosomes are small circles that can be found floating freely around the cell in the cytoplasm or attached to the endoplasmic reticulum. The ribosome's job is to handle translation in the synthesizing of protein. © www.123homeschool4me.com Color the Color the Color the Color the Color the Color the Color the Color the © www.123homeschool4me.com cell membrane brown.. mitochondrias purple. endoplasmic reticulum orange. lysosome blue. gogli green. centrioles pink. nucleus red. cytoplasm yellow. The wall around a cell. The organelles inside the cell that give the cell power. The control center of a cell. Stores and sends protein to other pars of the cell. The jelly-like substance inside a cell in which all the organelles float. Acts like a highway or factory conveyor that sends material to different parts of the cell. Organelles that protect the cell from foreign invaders and break down chemicals. Helps a cell make copies for growth or cell repair. © www.123homeschool4me.com Cut & Paste REVIEW Cut out the following key terms and tape them on top of the correct definition above of the Human Cell Book. By taping just the top it should make a lift the flap for students to not only reinforce what they’ve learned, but to later review these key terms.
