LESSON PREPERATION: As an educator it is always important to be prepared to present your lesson. Learners need to feel engaged in the lesson and if you are prepared they will understand and feel more comfortable about the topic beforehand. Before starting to prepare my lesson on a PowerPoint slide, I first went through my notes and did some research on topics that I felt unfamiliar with for example Maslow’s hierarchy of needs where I inserted extra information regarding his background. I gathered extra information and presented them in my slide in order for my learners to understand the topic. After reading through my notes and gathering information I then went and searched for pictures, clipart, wallpapers etc. in order to present it in my slides. I planned out my PowerPoint slide till the last detail and started laying it out. After creating my lesson I then went through it one more time in order to see if there were any spelling/ sentence construction mistakes. I then wrote down key words and important points to remember on a piece of paper and presented it to the learners. 8|Page JUANTELLE ANANDI BLAAUW – 60350520 LADEMSJ ASSIGNMENT 2 – 16 JULY 2021 When facilitating my lesson I made sure to keep eye contact and used a learner centred approach where I asked the learners their understanding regarding the topic needs and wants. As I presented the lesson, learners were asked multiple questions and work were explained when learners had trouble grasping the concepts. PATTERN OF THE LESSON: a) Existing Knowledge: I tested learner’s prior knowledge regarding the topic Needs and Wants by asking them questions. Learners also develop prior knowledge on the topic by identifying in their everyday life what they consider to be a need for them and a want for themselves. b) Introduction of lesson theme: I introduced my lesson through asking questions to test learners prior knowledge and demonstrating a video afterwards to show them the difference between the concepts. c) Explanation of new content: After identifying the difference between a need and want and showing them the video I went a little more in depth into the topic. New content that I presented to learners like what the five primary needs are, Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs etc. I asked questions afterwards and their understanding regarding the topic in order to see if they grasp the concepts of the new work correctly. I also included pictures into my slide in order for the learners to see the new work visually due to the fact that I believe learners learn faster when seeing the work and content in a video or picture. After explaining the new work I would repeat the work the next day by asking the learners questions regarding the previous work in 9|Page JUANTELLE ANANDI BLAAUW – 60350520 LADEMSJ ASSIGNMENT 2 – 16 JULY 2021 order to see if they understood the lesson that was presented to them the previous day/ period. ASSESSMENT: After each lesson the learners received an activity to do regarding the topic needs and wants (Activity 1, Activity 2 and Activity 3). After doing the activities we did a group activity game (boys vs girls) where I asked questions regarding the work in order for me to see if the work presented to them was clear and understood. 10 | P a g e JUANTELLE ANANDI BLAAUW – 60350520 LADEMSJ ASSIGNMENT 2 – 16 JULY 2021 Questions asked in the group activity: Lesson 1 (PowerPoint Slides) 2. 1. 3. 5. 4. 6. 11 | P a g e JUANTELLE ANANDI BLAAUW – 60350520 LADEMSJ ASSIGNMENT 2 – 16 JULY 2021 7. 9. 10. 8. 10. 11. 12 | P a g e JUANTELLE ANANDI BLAAUW – 60350520 LADEMSJ ASSIGNMENT 2 – 16 JULY 2021 Lesson 1 (Work handed out to learners) Needs & Wants Economics is the study of people's needs and the way these needs are met. Abraham Maslow (1908 - 1970) was an American Psychologist who set up a hierarchy of needs and arranged the needs in the correct order. Things you can do without. Secondary needs involve a person's wishes for a better quality life. MONEY is usually the means used to satisfy our needs and wants. Main sources of money are salaries and wages. Other sources include: Child support Grants and pensions from the government. Problem, however, is the scarcity of resources e.g. Water and trees. Some are non-renewable e.g. Coal and fuel. Therefore, unlimited needs and wants cannot be satisfied immediately. People have many needs and wants and very few have the resources e.g. money, to meet all these needs and wants. A choice must be made of the need / wants to be met first. Should a choice be made - choice problem. Defined as the opportunity to forfeit some or other want and to make a choice of one above another. Activity 3 1. Describe what a non-renewable resource is. (2) 2. Name 2 non-renewable resources. (2) 3. Name the 3 problems that occur in the economy. (3) 4. Give the definitions of opportunity cost. (2) 5.
