SLC Script for Band
Thank you for coming to conferences to see what I have learned in band.
My director is Ms. Lampe.
Upcoming performance(s): _________________________________________________________
My strengths on my instrument are:
❑ I sit with good posture
❑ I can keep a steady beat while I play
❑ I have good tone quality (that is, my embouchure is well developed/strong)
❑ I am able to count, clap and play the rhythms I have been taught
❑ I practice regularly (at least 4 times a week, for at least 15 minutes each time)
❑ I take a deep breath at appropriate times in the music
❑ I am always prepared for class (pencil, music, instrument, reed in good condition, valve oil, etc)
❑ I am able to read the notes on the staff that I should know for my instrument
❑ I know and understand how to apply various music terms (divisi/unison, solo/soli/tutti, etc)
❑ I can accurately play the following scales: ___________________________________________
❑ I can look up fingerings quickly to learn a new note
❑ I am attentive in class and stay focused on the director
I am challenging myself to become better at the following things:
❑ Develop better posture
❑ Keep a steady beat while I play
❑ Develop better tone quality (that is, strengthen my embouchure through practice)
❑ Count, clap and play rhythms I have been taught
❑ Breath deeply at appropriate times in the music
❑ Practice more regularly (at least 5 times a week, for at least 20 minutes each time)
❑ Be more prepared for class
❑ Read the notes on the staff more quickly and confidently
❑ Memorize and apply musical terms (repeat sign, divisi/unison, solo/soli/tutti, etc)
❑ Learn more of my scales
❑ Look up fingerings and quickly learn new notes
❑ Being attentive in class and staying focused on the director
These strategies will help me to reach my goals:
❑ Re-read the beginning of the book to remind myself of proper posture and position
❑ Practice with a metronome
❑ Say the notes as I read them
❑ Spot-practice hard parts
❑ Repeat it several times when I play it right
❑ Practice with a tuner
❑ Practice slowly
❑ Brass players: buzz the song, then play it
❑ Clarinets/saxophones: play only on the mouthpiece; make sure the correct pitch comes out
❑ Come in during PACE or after school for extra help
❑ Write down my assignments in my planner
❑ Pick a time to practice (for example, 4:00pm), then stick to that schedule every day
❑ Schedule re-do’s in a timely manner (don’t put them off until the end of the quarter!)
❑ Ask for help when I don’t understand
❑ Practice with a friend outside of school
❑ Use class time wisely
If I want to go to the “next level” in band, I can do the following things:
❑ Practice enrichment material during PACE or at home
❑ Join a community/honor/jazz band or orchestra
❑ Participate in Solo/Ensemble Contest
❑ Take private lessons on my instrument – see Ms. Lampe for a list of private teachers!
