Upcoming performance(s): _________________________________________________________ My strengths on my instrument are: ❑ I sit with good posture ❑ I can keep a steady beat while I play ❑ I have good tone quality (that is, my embouchure is well developed/strong) ❑ I am able to count, clap and play the rhythms I have been taught ❑ I practice regularly (at least 4 times a week, for at least 15 minutes each time) ❑ I take a deep breath at appropriate times in the music ❑ I am always prepared for class (pencil, music, instrument, reed in good condition, valve oil, etc) ❑ I am able to read the notes on the staff that I should know for my instrument ❑ I know and understand how to apply various music terms (divisi/unison, solo/soli/tutti, etc) ❑ I can accurately play the following scales: ___________________________________________ ❑ I can look up fingerings quickly to learn a new note ❑ I am attentive in class and stay focused on the director I am challenging myself to become better at the following things: ❑ Develop better posture ❑ Keep a steady beat while I play ❑ Develop better tone quality (that is, strengthen my embouchure through practice) ❑ Count, clap and play rhythms I have been taught ❑ Breath deeply at appropriate times in the music ❑ Practice more regularly (at least 5 times a week, for at least 20 minutes each time) ❑ Be more prepared for class ❑ Read the notes on the staff more quickly and confidently ❑ Memorize and apply musical terms (repeat sign, divisi/unison, solo/soli/tutti, etc) ❑ Learn more of my scales ❑ Look up fingerings and quickly learn new notes ❑ Being attentive in class and staying focused on the director These strategies will help me to reach my goals: ❑ Re-read the beginning of the book to remind myself of proper posture and position ❑ Practice with a metronome ❑ Say the notes as I read them ❑ Spot-practice hard parts ❑ Repeat it several times when I play it right ❑ Practice with a tuner ❑ Practice slowly ❑ Brass players: buzz the song, then play it ❑ Clarinets/saxophones: play only on the mouthpiece; make sure the correct pitch comes out ❑ Come in during PACE or after school for extra help ❑ Write down my assignments in my planner ❑ Pick a time to practice (for example, 4:00pm), then stick to that schedule every day ❑ Schedule re-do’s in a timely manner (don’t put them off until the end of the quarter!) ❑ Ask for help when I don’t understand ❑ Practice with a friend outside of school ❑ Use class time wisely If I want to go to the “next level” in band, I can do the following things: ❑ Practice enrichment material during PACE or at home ❑ Join a community/honor/jazz band or orchestra ❑ Participate in Solo/Ensemble Contest ❑ Take private lessons on my instrument – see Ms. Lampe for a list of private teachers!
