Atomic Notation
Atomic notatoin
We have a quick and easy way of
presenting information about atoms.
• It tells us the type of atom
• It tells us the number of protons (atomic number)
• It tells us the number of protons and neutrons (nuclear
number)
• We can use these to figure out the number of neutrons

Example
• The atom is carbon (C)
• The atomic number (bottom) is 6, which
means it has 6 protons
• The mass number (top) is 12, which means
the total number of protons and neutrons is
12
How many neutrons are there?

Example
• The atom is hydrogen (H)
• The atomic number (bottom) is 1, which
means it has 1 proton
• The mass number (top) is 1, which means the
total number of protons and neutrons is 1

Isotopes
• Here are three atoms of hydrogen
• The atomic number (bottom) is 1, which
means it has 1 proton
• The mass number (top) tells us the total
number of protons and neutrons is 1
