Animal Farm Literary Analysis
Animal Farm is a novel written by George Orwell and published on the 17th of August year
1945. The book is a political satire which addresses different themes such as animalism, religion,
corruption. The novel discusses many things, and it was treated by many as an allegory of
communism and the cold war. Although the Animal farm presents various topics, I personally
believe that the novel is a political satire on equality and power. I think that the events and themes
of the novel does not strictly apply to communism. Power and corruption it can bring is present in
the story. This corruption then led to inequality and abuse. Many situations in different places
experience this type of occurrences and corruption on different scales and severities.
Power and the desire to use it for selfish purposes drives the motivation for a lot of
characters in the story. The animals led by the pigs overthrew Jones, a careless ruler in control of
the farm in a rebellion. Rather than creating a better society for the animals after Jones was
eliminated, they were simply replaced by the pigs who were just as cruel. This is evident in the
later parts of the story where the pigs progressively act more and more like the humans that they
hated. The pinnacle of this was when they were standing upright living opulently and playing cards
with the humans.
The line that I define the book and its message in my opinion is "All animals are equal, but
some are more equal than others." The development of this statement from simply “All animals
are equal” clearly shows that inequality and corruption is at the root of the conflict in the novel.
This is all due to the corruption and cruelty brought by napoleon and squealer. This inequality was
highlighted when many of the animals died due to exhaustion and the lack of
Animal Farm is an interesting narrative on power, corruption, and inequality. The events
in the book reflect the horrible realities that many nations have experienced, and some are still
experiencing today. Power can easily corrupt and bring suffering the same way it can do good.
Our country, the Philippines is familiar with this type of corruption. From the bloody Marcos
Regime, and today in Duterte’s Administration. The same corruption and cruelty still plagues our
land.
