Task 2: Phone Case Design CHELSIE ALESSANDRINO YEAR 11 DESIGN GENERAL: PHOTOGRAPHY Design Process A systematic series of stages in the planning, development and production of designs in response to a brief. A basic structure of a design process could include the following stages: 1. Analysis of the design brief 2. Research 3. Ideation 4. Development 5. Production 6. Refinement 7. Final Presentation 8. Reflection The Design Brief DESIGN BRIEF: The written or verbal instruction to a designer outlining a design task. The design brief: • Describes the problem – the communication need • Provides information about the initiator – the client • Describes who the design is to be directed at – the audience • Explains how the design will be used – the purpose and context • Identifies constraints and limitations Analysis of the Design Brief You work as a designer for CaseCo, a small Perth business that specialises in phone cases and accessories. CaseCo plan to launch a new collection of phone cases marketed at local Perth teens and each design inspired by a real local teenager. Your phone case design must be photographic and it also must utilise the design elements and principles. It should also be inspired by your chosen local ‘muse’ by reflecting who they are and what they want in a phone case. You are required to produce one final concept for consideration. If CaseCo approves your design, it will be featured in the collection’s magazine campaign and proceed to production. Analysis of the Design Brief Design problem: What exactly is required? What should be included? We need to design a phone case inspired by a real local teenager. It must be photographic and utilize the design elements and principles. It should reflect who hey are and what they want to be. Required to produce one final concept. Target audience: Who is this design for? Designed for local Perth teens. The client: Who is the initiator of this design brief? CaseCo, a small Perth business that specializes in phone cases and accessories. Constraints and limitations: Are there any limitations to this project that will restrict your design choices? (ie. Budget, location, time etc) We have a deadline of 3 weeks to complete the phone case. It needs to be photographic and be inspired by my chosen local ‘muse’. Deadline: When is it due? How much time will you allocate to each stage of the design process? We have a deadline of 3 weeks to complete this project. One week for research and ideation. Market Research Collect existing phone case designs you have researched and insert on the following page. You can continue to add to this collection at any point in the design process Questionnaire Interview your chosen teenager about who they are and what they want in a phone case. During your interview, ask your teenager to answer the questionnaire provided and insert into your PowerPoint. Inspiration Board Create an inspiration board(s) made up of images that fit the design brief and the results from your questionnaire. Annotate how images may influence your own design. Mind Map CREATE A MIND MAP TO ASSIST YOUR ORGANIZATION OF IDEAS FOR YOUR DESIGN HTTPS://WWW.MINDMAPS.APP/ Development COMPLETE A RANGE OF THUMBNAIL SKETCHES ILLUSTRATING IDEAS FOR POSSIBLE PHOTOGRAPHS WRITE NOTES TO ACCOMPANY EACH THUMBNAIL Production - Contact Sheet • Create a contact sheet of a range of photographs from your shoot. • There is a folder called Contact Sheet in the Resources folder of the Photography drive which will instruct you how to create a contact sheet. • Annotate the photographs, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses as well as the choices that you have intentionally made. Think about the following: • Exposure and composition • Techniques • How the photograph fits the design brief Contact Sheet PHOTOS THAT HAVE THE BEST SHAPE FOR THE FINAL DESIGN I WANT. Contact Sheet REFINEMENT – PHOTOSHOP PROCESS Unedited Image(s) Edited Image Step 1: My first step was to put all the unedited images into the blank canvas with a black background and used the lasso tool to outline the photos. Step 2: I positioned the half hearts in the positions I wanted them to be in and then copy and pasted and reversed the image to make a full heart. Step 3: I then erase any black around the outsides and the edges to get a clean final design. FINAL DESIGN MOCK-UP OF FINAL DESIGN REFLECTION How successful do you think your final design is? I think my phone case was successful as it met my first design and colours but I believe I could have done a better job to meet all my standards that I set. Explain how your final design meets the design brief. I believe that my final design has met the design brief as I created a design that teenagers would enjoy and buy. It includes several elements and principles, for example colour, line, movement, pattern etc. What would you do differently next time? If I got to redo my phone case I would try doing a full heart with the light graffiti instead of doing one side of the heart then flipping it as it would just be easier and look better for the final design, I would also probably choose some different colours or lighter shades as I don’t fully enjoy the colours I chose.
