Also, many retailers have realized that a superior last-mile experience engages and retains
consumers. However, at the same time, meeting customers’ deliveries expectations does not help
in increasing profit margins, as today’s retailers are absorbing a part of the cost of last-mile
delivery. Therefore, ADR is helping these companies in achieving efficient last-mile delivery. It is
expected that, by 2025, 85% of last-mile deliveries will mainly be done using autonomous
vehicles.
Last-mile delivery has been one of the primary problems in handling the supply chain. Last-mile
deliveries are getting more and more complex in cities, as continued growth in e-commerce and
high consumer expectations for faster and frequent deliveries are causing traffic congestion and
increasing carbon pollution. According to the National Retail Federation, losses of about USD 333
million were incurred due to shipping mishaps. Owing to such issues in delivery, various
consumers and retailers have been looking for better and efficient methods of delivery.
The growing adoption of ADR is mainly driven by the increasing affordability and return on
investment of an increasing variety of infrastructure-light robots, along with continuing needs for
flexible and efficient automated fulfillment.
The advent of autonomous delivery robots (ADR) has revolutionized delivery systems, providing a
cheaper and efficient way of delivery. Though delivery robots did not experience high adoption in
the past, they are expected to witness high growth in the future, owing to various advantages.

A general shift has been ongoing toward autonomous delivery systems. Companies, such as
Google, partnered with Uber to provide one-day deliveries to its subscribers. Uber also offered a
service for same-day delivery, called UberRUSH. However, the service was not very successful,
and the company discontinued the service, owing to a lack of high business volume. Such trends
also justify the use of robotic delivery systems.
Considering the history of the adoption of autonomous delivery robots, regions, like the United
States, the market vendors are also investing in permits, as security is still a major concern in the
market studied. For instance, the delivery service provider, Postmates, debuted its food delivery
in 2018. Moreover, companies started obtaining the first permit for autonomous robot testing in
San Francisco back in 2019, which allowed the company to run three robots at one time in
specific city districts, at no more than 3 miles per hour, and only during business hours on the
weekends.
Moreover, the high use of vehicles further contributes to the traffic scenario in urban locales.
Various laws are being put in place to control global warming, and protecting the environment aid
in the growth of ADRs. The European Commission (EC) has set an objective of decarbonization by
2050, with a few immediate goals in 2020 and 2030.

raising about USD 17.2 million. It has also been delivering food for a company named JustEat. Nuro,
another startup, raised about USD 92 million from various investors.
MARKET OVERVIEW
■
Many governments have been favorable toward the growth of delivery robots. The European
Transport Policy aims to phase out conventional fuel vehicles by about 2050. It strives for zeroemission in city logistics in major urban centers by 2030. The state of Arizona has passed a bill officially
stating that the delivery devices have the same rights and duties as pedestrians, and they need to
follow the various traffic laws that are applicable for traffic in general.

However, the production and deployment of new autonomous delivery robots are increasingly
becoming difficult, owing to restrictions on the movement of goods and severe disruptions in the
semiconductor supply chain. With countries, such as China and Japan, enforcing strict lockdown
policies, there is a high scarcity of key raw materials used to manufacture autonomous delivery robots
in the global market.
Chinese O2O local life service company Meituan launched Modai delivery robots that deliver essential
groceries to communities in Beijing's Shunyi district. The global market is increasingly witnessing such
instances; therefore, the COVID-19 crisis is currently accelerating the deployment of autonomous
delivery robots.
In China, JD Logistics sent two L4 class unmanned delivery robots to Wuhan, which can also be
controlled remotely through the cloud to provide delivery in hotspot areas affected by the coronavirus.
Also, Idriverplus donated an unmanned delivery vehicle to hospitals for delivering medical supplies to
mobile and off-site medical camps.
Recently, in April 2020, Starships Technologies launched a robot food contactless delivery service in
Tempe, Arizona, in an ongoing pandemic that has hit the United States adversely. In Tempe, the
delivery service initially deployed just over 30 autonomous, on-demand robots to deliver food between
10:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. daily. The operations of the fleet were limited to a geofenced area that
included several restaurants and residential sites.
With the recent outbreak of COVID 19, autonomous delivery robots are gaining traction for
performing various contactless delivery operations, and the market is expected to witness several
instances of deployment, especially in the healthcare sector, with the ongoing pandemic crisis.
IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE INDUSTRY
■
The uncertainty in the recovery time of the market from the pandemic, economic impacts on several
parts of the world are further expected to provide significant challenges to the growth of the
semiconductor market, directly affecting the availability of key raw materials required for the
manufacturing of autonomous delivery robots globally.

Autonomous delivery robots can also help in scenarios, such as chronic nursing shortage in the
United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for nurses is expected to
increase by 16%, reaching 3.2 million in 2024 from 2.7 million in 2014 in the United States. Much
of the growth will be driven by the aging baby boomers who need additional care.
In July 2021, Sheba Medical Center announced a strategic partnership with Seemless Vision
which is an Israeli start-up for autonomous logistics infrastructure to plan on starting the delivery
of medications to patients through autonomous robots and reduce the pressure on the hospital
staff to deliver the medications on time.
Also, these robots are being used at Omaha VA Medical Center to fetch and drop medical supplies
on demand. They also support the facility by delivering several logistical items and lab samples. In
addition, they work 24 hours a day, which reduces the risk of human error in night operations.
Traditionally, robots were installed in several medical establishments for therapeutic use for
children. But now, they are even used to assist the medical staff in fetching the required resources
on demand. For example, consider the case of Aethon, a prominent robotics manufacturer based
in the US, which offers TUG Robots for medical applications.
Healthcare applications are one of the most advanced forms of autonomous delivery robots.
Unlike outdoor delivery robots, autonomous delivery robots deployed in healthcare applications
need to consider several additional parameters, such as the sanitation parameters, low noise
motors, and smoother travel in comparison to regular deliveries.
