SHOE BOX BEAN BAG TOSS FUN GAME - EASY PREP and SET UP - MULTIPLE USES - KIDS LOVE IT Materials: • • • • • 3 -5 empty shoeboxes Large index cards, or whatever you have on hand Bean bags to toss Whiteboard and marker to keep score Teacher’s list of words that fit the category you want to review: initial, final, or medial sounds, unit trick words, number of syllables, etc. a i o u Play the Game: Have 2-4 students ready to play, one student at a time. Tape a blank index card to the floor as the “Tossing Spot”. Label your empty shoe boxes with appropriate letters for the game. Set boxes up against a wall. For example, this above set-up is to isolate and identify the medial sound of cv-c words, using the vowels they have already been taught. (If they miscue, have them tap out the word to isolate the medial vowel sound, and its letter.) The teacher reads a set number of c-v-c words from their list, i.e., dog, cat, bug, sit, etc. After each word, the child repeats the word and says the target sound they hear, then tosses a bean bag into that box. When their list is done, it’s the next player’s turn. Each player will have the same number of similar, but different, c-v-c words. The teacher will keep score of bean bags that landed in the correct shoebox. The student with the most successful bean bag tosses is the winner.
