LO1 – How sport is covered in the media Television Terrestrial TV is television that is free and anyone with a TV licence can watch. For example, BBC, ITV and channel 4 and 5 are all part of this type. Some sport events are aired on these channels, like Match of the Day and Wimbledon. These sport events may reach higher numbers of viewers because they are free. Satellite TV is television that you need a subscription to watch. SkySports and BTSport are part of this. This type of television has rights to any sports events like Premier League and NFL. Pay-per-view TV is television pay for once to watch one event. This includes boxing and wrestling matches. This type makes a lot of money for the performers, companies and sponsors involved. One company involved is usually BoxOffice. Internet Live Streaming is video streamed in the present time, live. People can transmit and receive live video of sport events and programmes. For example, some streaming services are CBS All Access, BTSport, Youtube TV, Fubo TV and Netflix. Podcasts are audios streamed where the public can discuss and argue sport events. These can include interviews of sport stars to gain more information and to get to know the star more. Some podcast streaming services are Spotify, BBC and Rugby Union Weekly. Social media is apps and sites that allow you to communicate and share photos, videos and opinions. This is a very popular way to promote events and stars because technology is evolving and more and more people are getting involved in social media. Some examples of this type are TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and Facebook. Blogs are online journals where someone writes a report and gives personal opinions. These display information about sport events and what they think of it. For example, some blog sites are Youtube, Vimeo, Twitch and Daily Motion. Fan sites are sites online where viewers can rant and express their opinions. This way gives fans a chance to get involved and cause also lead to entertaining arguments. Some examples of fan sites are ArsenalFanTV and FanFormus.net. Radio Dedicated sports radio is radio that revolves around only sport and nothing else. This type has live commentary and is partnered with bigger corporations. They also host many interviews with sport stars directly and feature phone ins from the public. For example, TalkSPORT and BBC radio 5 are part of this. Local radio coverage is radio that is in the local area. These cover the local teams and discuss the games and the scores. For example, BBC radio Lancashire and Radio Wave cover Lancashire. National radio coverage is radio that includes sport events from all across the country. Some sport covered are the Olympics, Premier League and FIFA World Cup. Internet radio stations are digital audios transmitted via the internet. These can be popular as internet and technology is advancing and becoming more popular. Some examples of internet radio stations are WebAudio and NetRadio. Written Press Newspapers A newspaper is a publication on paper, usually daily or weekly, printed on low-quality paper. They inform the public/reader about small and big news effectively to gain attention so people want to purchase one. Sport stories are usually presented at the back of the newspaper, along with dates for upcoming games for people to tune in on. Some local newspapers to me are Blackpool Gazette and Fleetwood Weekly News. Some national newspapers are The Sun, Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, The Guardian and The Independent. Dedicated Magazines A dedicated magazine is a magazine that is only based on one topic. It gives news stories, ads and information about the topic and so people that are particularly interested purchase them. With many of these magazines, you can buy a subscription so that every time a new one comes out, it is delivered to your house and the money is taken out of your bank account. Some examples of topics are sport, fashion, makeup and house interior. Examples of sport dedicated magazines are Cycle Weekly, Golf Digest, Athletics Weekly, Golf Week and World Soccer. Books Books are written work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers. Types of books are autobiography, biography and factual. Sport books can contain information about one person’s life, their good times and hard times, and all of their experiences. This shows the motivation and resilience of that sports person, and causing the reader to feel inspired. Other sport books can be factual – showing facts about sport teams and the players, giving the reader more information on the favoured team. Some examples of sport books are Froch, Jessica Ennis: Unbelievable, Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth and Joey Barton: No Nonsense. Fanzines A fanzine is a magazine usually produced by enthusiasts of a topic. They are for the fans to read and gain information from. Fanzines include opinions and insight on games, and how they predict future games will happen. Although, the number of purchases of fanzines are declining, due to social media, making the information fanzines give more accessible, and most of all, free. This causes fans not to want to waste money, and so instead use their phones and technology. Some examples of fanzines are Red Issue, The Gooner and The Town of My Life.
