LO1 – How sport is covered in the media
Television
Terrestrial TV is television that is free and anyone with a TV licence can watch. For
example, BBC, ITV and channel 4 and 5 are all part of this type. Some sport events
are aired on these channels, like Match of the Day and Wimbledon. These sport
events may reach higher numbers of viewers because they are free.
Satellite TV is television that you need a subscription to watch. SkySports and
BTSport are part of this. This type of television has rights to any sports events like
Premier League and NFL.
Pay-per-view TV is television pay for once to watch one event. This includes boxing
and wrestling matches. This type makes a lot of money for the performers,
companies and sponsors involved. One company involved is usually BoxOffice.
Internet
Live Streaming is video streamed in the present time, live. People can transmit and
receive live video of sport events and programmes. For example, some streaming
services are CBS All Access, BTSport, Youtube TV, Fubo TV and Netflix.
Podcasts are audios streamed where the public can discuss and argue sport events.
These can include interviews of sport stars to gain more information and to get to
know the star more. Some podcast streaming services are Spotify, BBC and Rugby
Union Weekly.
Social media is apps and sites that allow you to communicate and share photos,
videos and opinions. This is a very popular way to promote events and stars
because technology is evolving and more and more people are getting involved in
social media. Some examples of this type are TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter
and Facebook.
Blogs are online journals where someone writes a report and gives personal
opinions. These display information about sport events and what they think of it. For
example, some blog sites are Youtube, Vimeo, Twitch and Daily Motion.
Fan sites are sites online where viewers can rant and express their opinions. This
way gives fans a chance to get involved and cause also lead to entertaining
arguments. Some examples of fan sites are ArsenalFanTV and FanFormus.net.
Radio
Dedicated sports radio is radio that revolves around only sport and nothing else. This
type has live commentary and is partnered with bigger corporations. They also host
many interviews with sport stars directly and feature phone ins from the public. For
example, TalkSPORT and BBC radio 5 are part of this.
Local radio coverage is radio that is in the local area. These cover the local teams
and discuss the games and the scores. For example, BBC radio Lancashire and
Radio Wave cover Lancashire.
National radio coverage is radio that includes sport events from all across the
country. Some sport covered are the Olympics, Premier League and FIFA World
Cup.
Internet radio stations are digital audios transmitted via the internet. These can be
popular as internet and technology is advancing and becoming more popular. Some
examples of internet radio stations are WebAudio and NetRadio.
Written Press
Newspapers
A newspaper is a publication on paper, usually daily or weekly, printed on low-quality
paper. They inform the public/reader about small and big news effectively to gain
attention so people want to purchase one. Sport stories are usually presented at the
back of the newspaper, along with dates for upcoming games for people to tune in
on. Some local newspapers to me are Blackpool Gazette and Fleetwood Weekly
News. Some national newspapers are The Sun, Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, The
Guardian and The Independent.
Dedicated Magazines
A dedicated magazine is a magazine that is only based on one topic. It gives news
stories, ads and information about the topic and so people that are particularly
interested purchase them. With many of these magazines, you can buy a
subscription so that every time a new one comes out, it is delivered to your house
and the money is taken out of your bank account. Some examples of topics are
sport, fashion, makeup and house interior. Examples of sport dedicated magazines
are Cycle Weekly, Golf Digest, Athletics Weekly, Golf Week and World Soccer.
Books
Books are written work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side
and bound in covers. Types of books are autobiography, biography and factual.
Sport books can contain information about one person’s life, their good times and
hard times, and all of their experiences. This shows the motivation and resilience of
that sports person, and causing the reader to feel inspired. Other sport books can be
factual – showing facts about sport teams and the players, giving the reader more
information on the favoured team. Some examples of sport books are Froch, Jessica
Ennis: Unbelievable, Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth and Joey Barton: No Nonsense.
Fanzines
A fanzine is a magazine usually produced by enthusiasts of a topic. They are for the
fans to read and gain information from. Fanzines include opinions and insight on
games, and how they predict future games will happen. Although, the number of
purchases of fanzines are declining, due to social media, making the information
fanzines give more accessible, and most of all, free. This causes fans not to want to
waste money, and so instead use their phones and technology. Some examples of
fanzines are Red Issue, The Gooner and The Town of My Life.
