MOVIE CRITIQUE BY ALOYSIUS A. GARCIA Aloysius A. Garcia 10-Antonio Luna English Week 7 April 13, 2022 Performance Task “VOYAGERS” By Neil Burger Movie Critique Film Intro: “VOYAGERS” is directed by Neil Burger. It is a movie about a group of people struggling with the concept of space and isolation while travelling to a distant planet to establish a new future. Plot Summary: The futuristic film revolves around a scientist’s dream of going to a faraway planet to begin a new human civilization now that the earth is doomed for destruction. The main character, Richard, wants to embark with a group of young men and women to protect them while aboard the traveling space ship. Their mission is going to another planet that scientists discover can support human life. In 2063, Astro-physicists discover a habitable planet that human life can live in. They send a group of kids of 15 boys and 15 girls for the mission. But, with the new planet being so distant, only their grandchildren will be the ones who can reach the planet. Eighty-six years after launch, they finally made it. Setting Spotlight: The story took place mainly aboard the space shuttle the characters are using to go to the target destination. While on board, the passengers discovered that they being controlled and drugged to suppress basic human emotions and instincts. After refusing to drink the “blue” water they experienced the sudden surge of some violent emotions which led them to quarrel with one another. Character Limelight: Christopher is symbolized as “The Control”. After he stopped drinking The Blue, he began to think and touch Sela’s hand. After that, he hallucinated and so he tried to control himself. Sela, as “The Power” was doing her duty and didn’t want to give up on anything and she’s always ready no matter what happened to her. Zac, as “The Hunger”, like Christopher also stopped drinking The Blue because they thought that The Blue was controlling them. Zac suddenly couldn’t control his emotion when he grabbed Sela’s hand. Richard, one of the leaders, told Zac to stop. After a couple of hours, Zac and Christopher saw Richard touch Sela’s shoulder. Zac got mad and jealous and after a couple of days killed Richard while fixing the LCT transmitter. Likes and Dislikes: It is admirable that the movie stresses human triumph against all odds. Even after so many challenges, the main characters of the movie prevailed and were able to leave the whole group to successfully complete the mission. It is unfortunate, however, that they had to kill Richard’s character early in the movie because he was showing a strong presence and advisory role for the whole youthful group. Lesson Learned: The moral of the movie is that it shows that we must control our emotions, be our own man and accept reality, and that no matter the difficulties, everyone should persevere and not lose hope. Recommendations: I recommend watching this movie. It’s awesome and enjoyable because the movie offers hope amidst great problems encountered. ________________________________________________________________________
