“What if the only reason we die is because we believe it is inevitable?” Sara said as she picked
up an avocado from the pile and gently applied just a bit of pressure. The sun was attempting to stream
in from all around the little pop-up tent top that sheltered the tables of glistening, vibrant produce.
“So you are saying that we are making it happen because we believe it will?” Katie looked at
her skeptically from behind her over sized sunglasses and under her wide brimmed hat.
Sara was satisfied with that first avocado and went on to find another perfect specimen as she
added “No, it's more than that. We think we are going to die, so we make all of our decisions based on
that one assumption. I'm only young once, so I might as well eat this or drink that. I might as well stay
out dancing in TJ 'til three. If we made all of our choices and decisions based on other assumptions,
you know? Like consciously and deliberately? The outcome would be wildly different.”
“Yeah, but...” Katie paused and thought about that before she added “you never know if you are
going to get hit by a bus or struck by lightening. People would still die.”
Sara nodded and conceded as she surveyed the pile of produce she had picked out. “Yeah, but if
you didn't assume those things were going to happen, and you could impact a lot of things by thinking
as if and acting as if.”
Katie smirked and replied “A lot of people live shorter lives because they think they are
invincible. Just look at Matt. He thinks the world is his oyster, and how many DUI's does he have
now?”
Sara finished paying the man behind the tables and loaded the fresh sustenance into her bag as
she giggled. “You're right about that.”
The two young ladies walked out into the glaring sunshine. They passed a vape pen of some
controlled substance between them as they meandered between the rows of vendors offering samples of
hot sauce or couscous salad. “Let's go grab a drink.” Sara suggested.
