IDEAL AEROSMITH Smiths Aerospace B737 FMCS Return-to-Service Tester for Airline Avionics Shops Ideal Aerosmith, in partnership with Smiths Aerospace, now offers a cost-effective PC-based return-to-service (RTS) tester for Smiths’ Model 2907 4 MCU Flight Management Computer System (FMCS) that is standard equipment on Boeing 737300/400/500 and 737-700/800/900 aircraft. The tester is fully authorized by Smiths Aerospace and is programmed to automatically execute the return-to-service test as specified in the applicable Smiths FMCS Component Maintenance Manual (CMM). The FMCS RTS Tester can be used by avionics maintenance shops to quickly test FMCs that have been removed by line maintenance personnel. A successful test enables the airline to re-certify the FMCS as serviceable and filter No Fault Found (NFF) units from the repair pipeline, thus avoiding NFF charges from the OEM. Fewer units in the repair pipeline may allow the airline to reduce its FMCS spares requirement. An investment analysis using conservative assumptions will generally lead to a payback within one year for even small fleets (< 8 aircraft). The RTS tester uses a wraparound test approach. There are 31 tests run during the automated test that meet or exceed the capabilities of the LRU’s on-board BIT test. Each discrete output drives a group of discrete inputs, and each ARINC 429 output drives one or more ARINC 429 inputs. The host PC connects directly to the LRU via an RS-422 maintenance port that is used for loading data and executing test commands. This tester supports the following Smiths Aerospace FMCSs: Aircraft Size Smiths P/N B737-300/400/500 4 MCU 171497-01-01, 171497-04-01, 171497-05-01 B737-600/700/800/900 4 MCU 171497-05-01, 176200-01-01 B737 BBJ 4 MCU 171497-05-01, 176200-01-01 A Turnkey System The RTS tester is a turnkey system that includes all special hardware and software required to perform return-toservice testing of the Smiths FMCS (115 Vac/400 Hz power supply and DMM are not included). A new Pentium PC with a current version of Microsoft Windows is provided. It is fully configured and all software is loaded at the factory. Two cards are installed in the PC: (1) a high-speed RS-422 serial card, and (2) a digital THE IDEAL WAY I/O card. Cables are provided to connect these cards to the UUT Adapter Tray, which contains loopback wiring, lamps, relays, loads, switches, and a number of external test points. The FMCS unit-under-test mounts securely onto the UUT Adapter Tray. The 737 FMCS Return-to-Service Test program is an executable Windows application program that is invoked from an icon on the default desktop screen. Once launched, it presents testing options that will be readily understandable to operators who are familiar with Windows application programs. NOTE: The RTS Tester will download into the UUT special RTP (Resident Test Program) and OFP (Onboard Flight Program) software that is controlled and distributed by Smiths Aerospace. The user must ensure that the proper software part numbers, as specified in the applicable CMM, are procured from Smiths. Basic and Intermittent Failure Troubleshooting A key feature of the tester is its ability to download and print flight fault history from the UUT prior to initiating the test. The tester features test points for monitoring ARINC 429 signals and internal power supply voltages, allowing confirmation of the internal power supplies and ARINC 429 drivers without breaking the seal on the UUT. The test software also allows certain test modules to be run on a continuous basis so that suspected intermittent failures can be identified.
