Academic Vocab Terms 2
Directions: For each word write the definition, part of speech, a synonym and an
antonym. You must choose a minimum of 8 vocab words to write a power sentence
for. Include an appositive phrase in each sentence. For 2 of the words, please
provide a picture in color that depicts the definition. Don’t forget to underline each
word when it is used in a sentence.
1. Alleviate verb, make less severe.
2. Attribute verb, regard something as being caused by (someone or something)
3. Contrast noun the state of being strikingly different from something else in
juxtaposition or close association.
4. Digress: verb, leave the main subject temporarily in speech or writing.
5. Distort: verb, pull or twist out of shape.
6. Divulge: verb, make known (private or sensitive information).
7. Exemplify: verb, to show or illustrate by example
8. Fallacy: noun, a mistaken belief, especially one based on unsound argument.
9. Impartial: ADJECTIVE, treating all rivals or disputants equally; fair and just.
10. Intercede: verb, intervene on behalf of another.
11. Sabotage: verb, deliberately destroy, damage, or obstruct (something),
especially for political or military advantage.
12. Tumult: noun, a loud, confused noise, especially one caused by a large mass
of people.
13. Voracious: adjective, wanting or devouring great quantities of food.
 Ms. Johnson, the school nurse, alleviated his wound.
 I observed an interesting contrast in the teaching styles of the two teachers,
Mrs. Lewis and Ms. Lynch.
