Date: March 12, 2022
Time: 10:00AM – 12:00PM
General Information
The TIP Manila Civil Engineering Department is conducting its Civil Engineering Week
2022 with the theme of “Faith, Trust, and A Hard Hat: ExperienCE the Magic of Building Dreams,
OnCE Upon A Time.” on March 11,12 & 14, 15, 2022. In line with this, there are a lot of activities
that has been prepared and one of those is the Bridge Building Competition.
Civil Engineering Week 2022 shall be conducted via Zoom Conference.
This instruction covers the administrative and operative issues for the celebration of CE Week
2022.
ELIGIBILITY
1. Participants shall be a bonafide Civil Engineering Student of Technological Institute of the
Philippines- Manila.

COMPETITION PROCESS
The whole competition consists of 5 different rounds, each round follows the same process as the
previous rounds. The participant that will earn the most points at the end of the competition will be the
Champion.
Moderators, officers and judges are allowed to disqualify any participant not following the following
guidelines:
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
The Zoom details (link and password) are confidential and must not be shared to non-participants.
Before entering the Zoom Webinar, kindly change nickname to “Full name (LN, FN, MI) / Year
Level”. ex. Potante, Polline Nicole, M. / 4th Year
Failure to change the nickname will result in being kicked out from the Zoom Webinar.
The participant may enter the Zoom 10 minutes before the event proper.
Camera must be always on once the round starts.
Sending private messages to other participants are strictly prohibited.
Any forms of cheating or team up with other participants are not allowed.
PHASE I: BRIDGE PRESENTATION
●
●
●
A series of image of a bridge will be shown at the screen. The participants will be given 2 minutes
to inspect the bridge; its construction, material used, and overall dimension.
While the image is shown, the hosts will announce the dimension of the bridge; length, width, and
height.
Participants are allowed to write down their observations that they think might help their estimation.
PHASE II: COST ESTIMATION
●
●
●
●
●
With a 3 - minute timer on the screen the participants must estimate the total cost of the bridge
shown. Before the time runs out, the participants must send their estimated value via google forms
that the moderator will send on the chat box.
The moderators will then collect the answers of all participants.
After collecting all the estimated values, a video of the builder will then be shown where the builder
will reveal the actual cost of the bridge.
The winner of this category will be determined as to which participant managed to have the lowest
percentage difference.
The percentage difference between the estimated and actual cost is defined by the equation:
|𝐴𝐶 − 𝐸𝐶|
% 𝐷𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 =
𝑥 100 %
𝐴𝐶
Where:
EC = Estimated Cost
AC = Actual Cost
● The host will then announce the material used for the construction of the bridge. This information
will help the participants with their prediction on the next category.
PHASE III: LOAD ESTIMATION
● An object will be shown on the screen. This object will be the constant load that the builder will
apply to their bridge.
● With a 5-minute timer on the screen the participants must estimate the actual number of object
(load) the bridge will endure. Before the time runs out the participants must send their predicted value
via google forms that the moderator will send on the chat box.
● The moderators will then collect the answers of all participants.
● After collecting the predicted value of each participant, the builder will then proceed to test the
bridge they construct. The process of bridge testing will be shown as follows:
o Weights will be applied at the mid span of the bridge.
o Loads will be applied with a constant difference and a 5 seconds delay before the
next load is applied.
o
If the bridge fails at the nth load applied, the total load applied will be the last
placed load before it failed.
o The bridge will also be considered FAILED if:
▪
The bridge slips
▪
A member disconnects or Total Destruction.
▪ The winner of this category will be determined as to which participant managed to have the lowest
percentage difference.
▪ The percentage difference between the estimated and actual load is defined by the equation:
% 𝐷𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 =
|𝐴 − 𝑃|
𝑥 100 %
𝑃
Where:
P = Predicted Maximum Load
A = Actual Maximum Load
▪
▪
This process will be repeated until all 5 rounds and 5 bridges are presented. The pointing system
for each category is as follows:
o Lowest percentage difference = 10 points
o 2nd lowest percentage difference = 9 points
o 3rd lowest percentage difference = 8 points
o 4th lowest percentage difference = 7 points
o 5th lowest percentage difference = 6 points
o Remaining participants = 4 points
The points will be tallied at the end of all rounds. The points will then be checked by the organizers
and judges. The decision of the judges is final and irrevocable.
