Tone is author’s attitude towards the audience, the subject, or the character.
It is shown through dialogue and description. Mood is the feeling the reader
gets from the story. The reader can determine the mood through setting. If the
author did their job right in setting the tone, it will reflect in the reader’s mood, or
feelings. Tone and mood will be positive (+), negative (-), or neutral.

Tone and Mood Don’t
Have to be the Same
And there isn’t just one word to describe
the tone
While tone and mood are interconnected, the tone
and mood may not always be the same. One can
be negative while the other is positive. For
example, the tone can be serious, but the mood
can be ridiculous:
He approached the task with sheer determination. He had studied his plans carefully, spent
hours preparing and was sure of his approach. The hours he spent practicing were grueling
and exhausting but he was ready. This was the year he would win the pie eating contest at
school.
Think about how you sound to others when
you’re having a conversation—your word choice,
volume, inflection, etc.— then think about how
the person listening feels.
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE: HELPING YOU CREATE AN IMAGE
Metaphor: a comparison using “to be” verbs (is, am, was, were, be,
being, been) saying one unlike thing IS like the other thing. Example:
The computers at school are old dinosaurs.
Simile: a comparison using like or as (a little bit easier to identify and
come up with) ex: She is fast as a cheetah.
Personification: gives human characteristics and qualities to
nonhuman things. Example: The fl owers begged for water.
Hyperbole: is a deliberate exaggeration. Example: Roblox is the best
ever.
