Slide 1: Presentation topic: Discourse Analysis of Liaquat Ali Khan’s Speech at University of Kansas Presented by: Huma Munir (192670016) Muhammad Ameer Maaveya (192670018) Slide 2: Introduction: The area of discourse analysis which we are going to analyze is Liaquat Ali Khan’s political speech “Pakistan and the Modern World” at the University of Kansas while addressing the students of there. Context of the Project: This research is conducted under the project of GIFT University Gujranwala, which is the largest University in the town. The aim of our University is to give practical experiences along with the degree. Slide 3: Objectives: ● To study the language usage of a political leader while addressing the foreigners. ● To evaluate the ideology of a political leader about his country. ● To know the speech is democratic or neutral political speech. Terms: Patriotic Patriotic is an expression of devotion to and vigorous support for one’s country. Ideological Ideological is based on or relating to a system of ideas and ideals, especially concerning economic or political theory and policy. Self-centered The person who is pre-occupied by oneself or one’s affair. Slide 4: Data: All the speeches of political leaders are recorded on the special events. This speech of Liaquat Ali Khan “Pakistan and the modern World” was recorded at the University of Kansas on the occasion of award distribution on May 1950, while addressing the American students. The data of the speech is collected from the book “A selection of modern English essays”, which is compiled and edited by Professor Sajjad Shaikh which was published in 1993 by Ch. Ahmad Najib. Analysis of Data: The data is investigated, analyzed and pondered critically which gives many direction as it covers political conditions as well as religious circumstances of subcontinent. Liaquat Ali khan raised the value of Pakistan in the Asia in his speech at various points because many Westerns till 1950 thought that Pakistan and India was still subcontinent and there was no separate identity of Pakistan. Slide 5: Results: Patriotic Liaquat Ali Khan showed his patriotic nature through his words as; ● I have advisedly chosen the subject of Pakistan and the Modern World. ● It is fitting, therefore that in expressing gratitude for your generosity, my country more than myself should speak to you on this occasion. Ideological Liaquat Ali Khan highlights how ideological confusions create anxiety in the area or country; ● But in many of them you will also see internal strains, moral doubts, ideological conflicts, waverings, hesitations and confusion. ● Halting democracies and ideological confusions create great anxieties for the governments in Asia, for the people of Asia and for peace-loving and world minded people anywhere. Slide 6 Self-Centered Liaquat Ali Khan use the pronoun “I” in his speech at many places which shows he was a self-centered as; ● I cannot adequately thank you. ● I have done this for two reasons. ● I am conscious of the fact that you have been kind enough to select me as the recipient of your recognition. ● If I may be permitted to say. ● I trust I shall be of some assistance to you in discovery a part of Asia. But, due to use of the pronoun “I”, the researcher cannot says that he was a selfcentered person. He also focused on the others perspectives as in the above lines “thank you”, “your recognition”, “permitted to say”, “you in discovery a part of Asia” respectively shows that he also value the others. Slide 7: Conclusion: The analysis of Liaquat Ali Khan’s speech reached the following conclusions: ● Liaquat Ali khan is a religious personality along with his democratic nature who believes in equal rights for everyone instead of discriminate between the man and woman. Liaquat Ali Khan again and again stress on the words “man and woman” in his speech, instead of using only one person or gender. ● Liaquat Ali Khan’s speech shows, he appreciate the efforts of United States of America for their efforts in building up their country as a productive as well as democratic and also wish to follow the path of them to become progressive in every field. ● Liaquat Ali Khan believes in the freedom of every kind, whatever the circumstances is. Freedom from physical slavery or mental slavery, freedom from desires, freedom from the power. Liaquat wants that every human breathe in the air of freedom rather than captivity. Slide7: ● Liaquat Ali Khan is a democratic personality, who believes that every individual have the right to choose their leader according to their own will instead of implement someone on them to rule over and demolish their rights. ● As Liaquat Ali Khan represent Pakistan on the occasion of Kansas University, he portray his message as a well-being Pakistani. He convey the message of peace towards the Modern World through his speech and also introduced the warm hearts of Pakistanis by appreciating the efforts of them as how they started and what they are now. ● Liaquat Ali Khan believes in the time of today rather than past and future. He concentrates in learning from the past and make decisions for the present instead of future planning.
