G7 English P4 Unit 2 STEAL character analysis examples Student Revision Learning Objectives I will be able to... Analyze a character from a novel using STEAL evidence. Language Objectives: I will be able to... Use target language (infer, this shows that, this means that, must be, might be) to present the above information to my audience. Character Analysis (STEAL) Character and STEAL • Use STEAL to infer something about this character. • Try to identify one example of each: Speech, Thoughts, Effect on Others, Actions, Looks • Use these examples to infer at least three things about the character’s personality, or about their lives. (You can mention inferences about their feelings if appropriate. But, the focus is on their personality.) • Use evidence: short quotations from the text with the page number. “He was an impatient boy.” (p11) • Make predictions based on this new information. Examples of STEAL Character Analysis Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl Part 2: Characters and STEAL ----Grandparents Speech: OK From their speech, I can infer that Charlie’s grandparents love to tell their grandson Charlie stories. BETTER I can infer that Charlie’s grandparents are happy, caring people, because their speech sounds so excited when they tell Charlie stories. ‘True?' cried all four of them at once.’ The word ‘cried’ shows that they are excited. They get excited because they love Charlie, and love to make him happy. Part 2: Characters and STEAL ----Charlie Effect on Others: OK From his effect on others, I can infer that he is a good child and loves his family. BETTER Charlie has a very good effect on his grandparents. He makes them happy by going to see them every day. The author tells us that: ‘when Charlie…was in the room, (Grandpa) seemed to grow quite young again.’ This shows us that Charlie has a positive effect on Grandpa, by making him feel happy and young again. He is definitely a good, caring grandson, who treats his grandparents well. Part 2: Characters and STEAL ----Charlie Actions: From his actions I can infer that Charlie is a very patient and kind boy. When he walked past the chocolate factory he held “his nose high in the air and took long deep sniffs of the gorgeous chocolatey smell all around him.” Even though Charlie clearly likes chocolate a lot he only gets to eat it “once a year.” However, he does not complain to his parents. This means that he respects his family a lot. Note the use of transitional words and phrases here. Part 2: Characters and STEAL --Willy Wonka Actions: From his actions I can infer that Willy Wonka is a very adventurous and creative man. He went “way out to India and built …. a colossal palace entirely out of chocolate.” Willy Wonka must have travelled very far to get to India, so he must be quite brave and adventurous. It must be very difficult to build a palace out of chocolate in such a hot place, so I think he must be very clever and creative. • Vocabulary: Use a range of interesting vocabulary for making inferences about the character’s personality. • Grammar: Use the Present Simple to make inferences about the character’s personality. Use the Past Simple to talk about events in the novel, and when making inferences about character’s lives in the past (past events.) • Cohesive devices: Use conjunctions and transitional phrases accurately.
