The tasks on this learning material focus on the features and techniques of formulating statement of opinion or assertion to enhance communicative competence based on real life experience anchored on the integration of values and literature. GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS: The learner demonstrates communicative competence through his/ her understanding of literature and other texts types for a deeper appreciation of World Literature, including Philippine Literature. MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY (MELC): Formulate a statement of opinion or assertion. (No code indicated for this MELC.) By the end of this lesson, you are expected to: 1. distinguish a statement of opinion form an assertion; 2. use special expression in formulating statements of opinion and assertion; and 3. write a paragraph stating opinion and assertion. . ii I. Directions: Identify if the statement is Fact, Opinion, or Commonplace Assertion. Write the letter of the correct answer on a separate sheet of paper. 1. All kids love recess. 2. Milk chocolate tastes better than dark chocolate. 3. Taking vitamins everyday will keep you healthy. 4. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. 5. The class average on last week’s test was 82%. II. Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is not. 6. “It seems to me that …” expresses an opinion. 7. Fact is known or proved to be true. 8. Assertion is a statement of personal belief, feeling, or thought. 9. The statement “Green is the best color” is an example of a factual claim. 10. “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away” is an example of assertion because this claim cannot be proven always true. 1 Look at the photos below. Looking Ahead Assertion When someone makes a statement investing his strong belief in it, as if it is true, though it may not be, he is making an assertion. Assertion is a stylistic approach or technique involving a strong declaration, a forceful or confident and positive statement regarding a belief or a fact. Often, it is without proof or any support. Its purpose is to express ideas or feelings directly Example: “I have put my every effort to complete this task today.” Function of Assertion The function of assertion is to let readers to feel that they should not disagree or dispute what they read or hear; rather, they should accept the idea or notion as an indisputable fact. It has proved to be one of the best approaches for writers to express their personal feelings, beliefs, and ideas in a direct way. By using this technique, writers can defend others’ feelings and rights if violated. This rhetorical style also expresses self-affirmation and rational 2 thinking of personal respect or worth. It is very common in various fields of life, like literature, politics, advertisements, and legal affairs. Facts These are statements that can be proven. Facts may be true or false, but they can be proven. Example: “Statistically, women live longer than men.” Opinion These are statements that cannot be proven. Opinions can be argued and may be supported by facts but cannot be proven. Example: “Math is the hardest subject.” “Milk chocolate is better than dark chocolate.” Commonplace Assertion These are statements that sound to be true but are based in common opinion. These are commonly referred to as stereotypes. Example: “Boys are stronger than girls.” “Taking vitamins everyday will keep you healthy.” Basic Assertion (Opinion) It is a simple and straightforward statement for expressing feelings, opinions, and beliefs Example: “I wish I could have expressed this idea earlier, because now someone else has taken the credit.” “Excuse me, first I want to finish my work, then I shall go with you.” You may use the following expressions in stating your opinion. It seems to me that … In my opinion, … I am of the opinion that …/ I take the view that .. My personal view is that … In my experience … As far as I understand / can see, … As I see it, … / From my point of view … As far as I know … / From what I know … I might be wrong but … If I am not mistaken … I believe one can (safely) say … It is claimed that … I must admit that … I cannot deny that … 3 I can imagine that … I think/believe/suppose … Personally, I think … That is why I think … I am sure/certain/convinced that … I am not sure/certain, but … I am not sure, because I don't know the situation exactly. I am not convinced that … I have read that … I am of mixed opinions (about / on) … I am of mixed opinions about / on this. I have no opinion in this matter. Chivalry and Romantic Ideals (Middle Ages, 1100-1500) The knights and troubadours (traveling poets and musicians) of medieval times opened doors, pulled out chairs, and let their ladyloves order first. These men knew their ladies wants and desires, it always came first and foremost in love; winning ladies’ hearts was their ultimate goal. Wealthy knights won women’s hands through brave deeds, while the poets won them over through their use of words and songs. These ideas were inspired by “courtly love,” which was a highly idealized and extravagant forbidden affair (mostly among the noble class) whose core beliefs were the superiority of the lady, the instability of desire, and the ennobling power of love.
