OBSERVING PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGES
PRE LAB:
 Read Lab outline (pg 160 of Science Power9 )
 You will be required to complete a full lab write up using the outline provided.
 Observation Chart
o Copy table 1 onto a piece of paper.
 Properties you will be observing:
o Review the signs of a chemical change from your notes.
PURPOSE: “To identify certain changes as being either physical or chemical”.
HYPOTHESIS: Read each of the 4 activities and speculate whether each would result in a
physical or chemical change.
MATERIALS & PROCEDURE: You may use the outline in the text as a guide. Be sure to
change any substances or equipment that were modified for your particular classroom. Anywhere
the text says “as instructed by your teacher” be sure to describe those instructions in your
procedure.
OBSERVATIONS: You will need to include a table of observations into your lab. Be sure this is
in the correct place in your report.
ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION: Be sure to justify whether each of the changes was physical or
chemical by referring to the signs and indicators discussed in class. Answer FIVE questions
(checkmarked) in the text. You may create a new table for this or do it in paragraph form, but
remember to be clear.
CONCLUSION: Make a clear statement about each of the 4 activities, identifying it as either a
physical or chemical change.
