AP CHEMISTRY SUMMER ASSIGNMENT

AP CHEMISTRY SUMMER ASSIGNMENT 2015
First off, I feel compelled to remind you all – again- that AP Chemistry is a second year course, taken
AFTER successful completion of both a year of Chemistry and Algebra II. If you have not completed
Chemistry and Algebra II, you should NOT be enrolled in the course – your chances of even passing are
slim. The course begins where Chemistry and Algebra II end. Please DO understand that AP Chemistry
does NOT teach, or cover, the same material you learned in Chemistry – it requires you to already know
how to do the basics (balancing equations, stoichiometry, etc).
You must do the summer assignment to be prepared for the beginning of class in August. Students that
have difficulty with this material be aware that this is EASY compared to the rest of the year. The
Summer Assignment is an EASY REVIEW of what you should already be able to do. It will be collected the
first day of school. You must do ALL work and show ALL work, with units, etc. Each chapter I will pick one
problem – if you have done it correctly and show all work you will get full credit for that chapter. If you
have the correct answer but not all the work you will get half credit for that chapter. If you have the
incorrect answer and you show all your work you will also get half credit. No credit if both the answer is
wrong and all the work is not shown. Be sure to report your answers to the correct number of significant
figures.
There will be a test on the first three chapters the first full class meeting. Be prepared for it!
Chapter One: read chapter, do all the psp’s (problem solving practice problems) and exc’s (exercises).
You can check your answers at the back of the book. Also do (at end of chapter)
#12,14,49,50,53,65,72,79,84. The answers to the even numbered problems are at the end of the
chapter. You need to memorize the common SI prefixes and units (table 1.2)
Chapter Two: read chapter, do all the psp’s (problem solving practice problems) and exc’s (exercises).
You can check your answers at the back of the book. Also do (at end of chapter) #2,4,6-17,20-46,5475,91,95,99,104,111,113-116. The answers to the even numbered problems are at the end of the
chapter. You must memorize more of the SI units/prefixes (table 2.1 and 2.2) You also must use solve all
problems and report your answers with the correct number of significant figures.
Chapter Three: read chapter, do all the psp’s (problem solving practice problems) and exc’s (exercises).
You can check your answers at the back of the book. Also do (at end of chapter) #6-9,12-16,20-24,2729,32-40,42,43,48,49,52-62,65-67,72-89,97-101,105,107,116,117,121. The answers to the even
numbered problems are at the end of the chapter. You MUST memorize the names and formulas of the
polyatomic ions (table 3.7)
