21st Century Literature: Analysis Activity The Maker is an animated film of a stuffed creature rushing to create his other half. In a tiny room, he was looking at the sand timer in front of him until it flipped then time began to flow. He opened the book of instructions and followed every step to make his own kind. He formed the face, stitched and stuffed the clothes to create the body, and attached all pieces together. It was complete, but he needed to bring the creature to life. He made every effort while racing with time, but it was still lifeless. He looked at the instructions again and started to play the violin. Finally, the creature came to life. They hugged each other in awe, but his time was already coming to an end. He handed her the book at their last moment, and as the last bit of sand dropped, he quickly disappeared into thin air. The theme of the story is intertextuality. The last scene with the female character parallels the first scene, where the male character was staring into the same sand timer. It seems that the tale is like a time loop, and the couple is stuck on making the other again after one disappears just to see each other again one more time. The idea is similar to the story of “Sa Susunod Na Habang Buhay” music video by Ben & Ben, where two couples got caught in a time loop. They live a life where they meet again and experience the same love story. In any way, we can relate very well to the story. I think it shows parallelism to our life here on earth. We are like the maker, and we do our best in everything we make. Like him, we also experienced losing someone and feeling lonely. But love and happiness also came into our lives. For me, the sand timer symbolizes our time here. It was flowing fast, and it seems to tell that life is indeed short. The maker also represents every one of us, and the efforts he made to bring that creature to life signify the acts of service we show to our loved ones. We are willingly giving them our time and affection because we love them. Lastly, the music played by the maker symbolizes the little things in life that make us feel more alive. It really interprets the phrase that says "music brings life." Overall, I think the story tells us how precious our time is and how we give it to the people we love.
