HUMANITIES
Latin word, “HUMANUS“ – human, cultured and refined.
Art is just one part of the world of the Humanities
Humanities studies man and the manner in which he conducts
himself from the time of his existence to the present. (Martin
& Jacobus, 2004)
FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF THE HUMANITIES
Human nature is inherently good.
Individuals are free and are capable of making choices.
Human potential for growth and development is virtually
unlimited
Self- concept plays an important role in growth and
development.
Individuals have an urge for self- actualization
Reality is defined by each person
Individuals have a responsibility to both themselves and to
others.
ART
Latin term sars, artis, - means everything that is
artificially made or composed by man.
One of the oldest and most important means of expressions
developed by man.
Refers to the skillful arrangement or composition of some
common but significant qualities of nature. (Adams, 2002)
FUNCTIONS OF ARTS
The human need for expression
The social need for display, celebration, and communication.
The physical needs for functional objects
ART: AS VIEWED BY PHILOSOPHY
1.

Socrates.
He was seen as a good literary stylist and a great story
teller.
Plato was said to have loved and hated the arts at the same
time.
He considered art as threatening.
He saw how powerful the arts can be in shaping a person’s
character. As such, He contended that although the arts can be
used to train citizens to have an ideal society, using arts to
accomplish this should be strictly controlled.
THEORIES OF ART BY PLATO
1. Art is Imitation
Art is an imitation of physical things which in turn are
imitation of the Forms.
Art is a copy of a copy which leads people farther away from
truth.
2. Art is Dangerous.
Art has power to stir emotions.
So, the arts should not go uncensored.
2.
ARISTOTLE
He was also a famous philosopher of Ancient Greece.
He was a student of Plato
He first distinguished between what is good and what is
beautiful.
He stated that the good always presents itself in some action
while a thing of beauty may exist even in motionless objects or
things.
Poets according to Aristotle, imitated three things:
1. Things and events which have been or still are;
2. Things which are said to be seen and are probable; and
3. Things which essentially are.
3.
IMMANUEL KANT
He was a German, Enlightenment Philosopher

His main interest was not in art itself but on beauty.
Beauty is a matter of taste
1. Subjective Taste
It does not focus on the properties of the subject itself but
rather on the pleasure one experiences as he responds to it.
For ex. When looking at the painting, what matters is not what
the painting is all about or how it is organized but rather on
the emotions that the painting is able to successfully arouse.
2. Universal Taste
It is non- aesthetic and does not consider the beauty of the
work or the mastery of the artist, but rather, the artwork is
appreciated for it is.
For ex. The painting of the Mona Lisa is admired because of
its popularity and because it was created by Leonardo Da
Vinci.
4.
