Helpful Hints
• When I have students complete this activity
we use crayons which really seems to help
struggling students. The first thing we do is
read the passage. Next, we read through all
of the events. We mark each event with a
different color then use those colors to find
the events in the passage. After all the
events have been colored, the events are
then easy to put in order. Instead of
crayons you could also use a highlighter to
find the events in the passages. (See the
example included on the next page.)
• I have included an optional additional
companion sheet to use with each passage.
The students practice sequencing and
summarizing the events in each passage
using a combination of writing and drawing.

Sequencing Events
Whitney is going on a field trip to the zoo. The
bus arrives at school to pick up the students.
At the zoo, the students have to buy tickets to
get in the gate. The first thing Whitney sees
are the elephants. She feeds them peanuts.
Next, Whitney sees the lions. There are three
lions in the den. Then, Whitney walks to see the
giraffes. Whitney gets to pet the giraffe’s
long neck. This is her favorite part of the day.
After, Whitney eats lunch. She packed a jelly
sandwich. Finally, it is time to go back to school.

straight to the games. They have to throw a
ball at five bottles and try to knock them
down. Gavin won a big teddy bear prize. Next,
Kendall and Gavin go look at the animals. Kendall
likes to look at the pigs. They get to pet the big
pigs. Then, Kendall and Gavin walk over to the
rides. They wait in a long line. Finally, they are
able to go on a fun car ride.

bear. She begins to look for her bear. First, she
looks under her bed. The bear is not there.
Next, she looks in her closet. Still, no sign of her
bear. Then, she looks behind the couch. Kelsey is
getting worried that she won’t be able to find
her bear. Finally, Kelsey looks outside in her
clubhouse. She finds bear sitting in the corner.
Kelsey is so happy to have her bear back.

flashes in the sky. Even with the storm, it is
time to get ready for school. Tom goes to the
closet and takes out his yellow raincoat. Next,
Tom puts on his green rubber boots. These
boots have a frog face on them and keep his
feet dry. Then, Tom puts on his floppy hat.
Finally, he grabs his umbrella and starts on his
way to school.

nervous. His hands begin to sweat and his
throat is dry. Mike picks up a long silver bat. He
walks up to home plate. The pitcher throws
the ball and It is a good pitch, but Mike doesn’t
swing. The pitcher throws the ball again and
Mike misses. That is two strikes. The pitcher
throws the ball a third time and this time Mike
hits it. Mike starts to run. He makes it around all
the bases and comes back to home plate.

something to eat for lunch. Jason thinks about
what he might want to eat. Jason decides to
make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. First,
Jason gets out two slices of bread. Next, he
gets out the peanut butter and jelly. Jason
uses a knife to spread the peanut butter on
one slice of bread. Then, Jason spreads jelly on
the other slice. Jason puts the two slices of
bread together. Finally, he cuts the bread in
half. Now it is time to eat the sandwich.

take with her. She picks an orange towel with a
hood. It looks like a clown fish. Next, she puts on
her sandals. Taniya begins to walk to the city
pool. It is a short walk. When Taniya gets to the
pool, she jumps right into the water.

second race. After, they play in the sandbox.

fountain. Then, Martin looks at the map and
finds a large oak tree. This is the spot. Martin
starts to dig. He finds a large chest filled with
treasure.

Sequencing Events
Jocelyn loves to make smoothies for a snack.
Her favorite smoothie to make is a mixed fruit
smoothie. The first thing Jocelyn does is get
out her blender. Next, Jocelyn takes out a
banana, a few strawberries and some
yogurt. She cuts up the banana and
strawberries and puts them into the blender.
Jocelyn scoops some yogurt and adds it to
the blender. She puts the lid on the blender and
turns it on. Then, she pours the smoothie into a
cup. Jocelyn takes a big sip. It tastes delicious.

Then, Jessica decides to jump rope. Jessica is
very good at jumping rope. She can even do
special tricks. Finally, to cool down Jessica
takes a short walk. After her walk, she gets a
tall glass of ice cold water.

sheets. Next, Cooper takes out the fitted
sheet. He puts the sheet on the bed. Then, he
takes out the big flat sheet. He lays it on top
of his bed and smooths it out. He then puts his
big blanket on top of his bed. Cooper puts his
three pillows at the top of his bed. Finally, the
bed is done. Cooper loves his new sheets.

takes a piece of string and ties it to the top
of the pinecone. Next, Katelyn takes out the
peanut butter. She spreads the peanut butter
onto the pinecone. She makes sure she covers
the entire pinecone. Then, She rolls the
pinecone in bird seed. The bird seed sticks to
the peanut butter. The bird feeder is now
done. She goes outside and hangs it in a tree.

her mother helps her poke holes in the lid of
the jar. Then, Alexis goes outside to look for
the fireflies. The little bugs light up at night so
they are easy to see. Alexis looks for a little
yellow light in the dark. She gently catches the
bugs in her hands. She carefully puts the bugs
into the jar. Alexis catches seven little fireflies.

the way down. Now Hailey and Justin are
ready to decorate their planes. When they
are done decorating, they throw their planes
outside in the yard.
