A
pirate is a person who attacks and robs ships
at sea.
WHO WERE THE PIRATES
 Piracy
is an act of robbery or criminal violence by ship
or boat-borne attackers upon another ship or a
coastal area, typically with the goal of stealing cargo
and other valuable goods. Those who conduct acts of
piracy are called pirates, while the dedicated ships
that pirates use are called pirate ships
WHAT IS PIRACY
 The
era of piracy in the Caribbean began in the
1500s and phased out in the 1830s after the navies of
the nations of Western Europe and North America with
colonies in the Caribbean began combating pirates.
WHEN DID IT START
 The
Golden Age of Piracy spanned the period from
approximately 1650 to 1726. During this period, bands
of pirates menaced commercial (and sometimes
even military) shipping in the Caribbean, along the
North American eastern seaboard, the West African
coast, and the Indian Ocean.
THE GOLDEN AGE OF PIRACY
 About-to-be
hanged pirates are recorded as
wearing fancy velvet coats and jackets, taffeta
breeches, gaily-colored silk shirts, ribboned stockings,
fancy-buckled shoes, and felt tricorne hats.
DRESSING
 Pirate
ship is a ship that pirates use to travel in the sees
they have large sails and has canons on both right

PIRATE SHIP
 Like
most seafarers of their time, pirates were highly
superstitious and could well have been worried by
the magical powers mermaids were said to possess, so
they would surely have been afraid of these sea
creatures.
WHAT WERE PIRATES SCARED OF
 Victims
of piracy endured torture, floggings, and
ceremonies of humiliation, but when brought to
justice, the pirates were given such punishments as
lengthy prison sentences, transportation to work in the
deadly conditions of African mines, or public
execution by hanging.
THE PUNISHMENTS OF PIRATES
 Edward
Teach, better known as Blackbeard, was an
English pirate who operated around the West Indies
and the eastern coast of Britain's North American
colonies
THE BEST PIRATE (BLACK BEARD)
 Modern-day
pirates come from all over the world,
scouring the waters of the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea
and the coasts of Africa. Somalia is considered the
most notorious producers of today's pirates, with a
huge percentage of them coming from this
