The next few pages will walk you through the process of teaching narrative writing with the Common Core Standards. If you don’t use CCSS in your school, these lessons also align with most other state standards. This unit can be easily modified for the resources you have available in your classroom and for multiple writing prompts. A teacher model is provided for each step to guide you in your teaching. Elements of Creative Narrative After students know what they need to write about (writing prompt), they need to know what should be in their writing. The elements of creative narrative page is an essential note-taking page to set the stage for their creative narrative. After the brainstorming pages, students will go back to the elements page using the rough draft of the teacher model essay to identify what each element should look like in their story. You may have them skip ahead to this step right after they complete this organizer, if you think it will be more effective. I personally choose to use it right before students go on to write their rough drafts because I want it to be fresh in their minds as they begin writing. These elements should be a part of their creative narrative no matter what writing prompt they use. That means this organizer can be used over and over! ©2014 Performing in Educa5on, LLC Revised in 2017 4 Brainstorming During the brainstorming phase, students will begin to develop a character and main setting for their story. You may decide to let your students write their creative narrative on any topic. If you decide not to use the included writing prompt (or for your students’ second creative narrative writing), a blank person is provided for this step. If you use the included writing prompt, use the astronaut character page.
