Well exceeding previous forecast in the “Status of CIS industry 2019” the CIS industry did end FY2019 up
13.6% above previously estimated forecast. The CIS industry players exceptionally achieved 25% YoY
growth rate amid a global semiconductor recession.
Having reached
$19.3B in 2019 the
CIS industry is
showing thriving
growth.
Globally the CMOS image sensors industry showed thriving growth. This performance is mainly due to the
sustainability of the mobile camera market but also most of the high-end markets. In this context sanctions
on Huawei exacerbated the demand for CIS having this player adding in the range of 2 quarters of
additional inventory. As of 2019, the industry reached the $19.3B and Yole expectation is for 8.1% CAGR
forecast for 2019 – 2025 timeframe, revenue should hit $27 B within five years. In 2020, security and
automotive have become the second and third largest CIS market segments.
Within “all markets except mobile”, two end product segments are on a downward slope : consumer
photography (DSC, DSLR, action cameras, drone cameras) and computing (PC, laptop, tablets) but with
possible signs of recovery. All other sub-segments, automotive, medical, security, industrial and defense &
aerospace, will outperform CIS market average in the next 5 years. CIS growth is currently dominated by
mobile, this will eventually switch to high-end segments before 2025.

CIS technology trend
• Technology race remains a key aspect of CIS competition, driving developments in smaller pixels, 3D
semiconductor technologies, and novel pixel designs.
• Over the years, significant improvements have been made to the CIS manufacturing process. The industry has
transitioned from FSI to BSI and now toward stacked BSI, where TSVs are used to make connections to the
sensor array and the logic die. Now the standard technique has moved to hybrid stack using Cu-Cu connections.
• In the latest product in pixel connections are being made.
• New designs, namely GS and ToF technologies, have gained large market access.
• iToF arrays have become the standard approach for implementing 3D in Android phones. Apple strategy is to
invest into breakthrough such as the “Lidar” it brough to market in 2020.
• Quantum and Neuromorphic approaches should bring a new generation of application to market.
• The next technology challenge should the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within CIS sensors.

• Under COVID-19 situation, the CIS industry was little affected.
• The short-term impact for CIS will be slower growth this year with a 7% YoY and $20.7B expected end result.
• The impact of Huawei ban is much more important since large quantities of CIS inventory were added in 2019
and 2020.This effect stopped the 15th September 2020.
• The expectation for 2021 is therefore the worse we have seen in recent times with a 2% YoY and $21.2B
expected end result.

geopolitical difficulties new challenges such as the mandate to reduce CO2 emissions will come into play and be
part of the competition.
