Hello! Welcome back again to school. I hope you are doing great. This Learning

Today, information can come anywhere. It could be manual information systems
such as a newspaper or library or computer-based systems such as the World Wide
Web. To facilitate you in your information pathways, this LAS will be your guide. It will
help you in using information from different sources such as news reports which you
can use both for academic and for personal purposes in everyday life.

_______1. Writing the news report requires answering the following questions: who, what,
when, where, why and how.
_______2. Any title of any news report is called a headline.

_______4. The Ombudsman can declare official public service announcement on COVID19 information.

B. Learn
NEWS, according to Ceciliano Jose Cruz, is a timely and factual
narration of past, present, and future event.
Follow this guide in writing the news report. These are the parts of a news
report.
1. News reports begin with a catchy HEADLINE. Headline is the heading at the top
of an article or page in a newspaper or magazine.
Ex. COVID-19 deaths soar high in Cebu City.
Headlines should be clear and specific, telling the reader what the story is about,
and be interesting enough to draw them into reading the article. Here are rules to follow
when making a headline.
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
5-10 words at the most
should be accurate and specific
Use present tense and active verbs, but don't start with a verb.
Do not use articles—a, an, the.
Do not use conjunctions like and—you can substitute a comma.
2. LEAD PARAGRAPH informs the reader of the most important aspects of the story
as soon as possible. The LEAD PARAGRAPH is often the only part of the story that
people read. Use the 5Ws rule:
WHO (is involved)
WHAT (took place)
WHEN (did it take place)
WHERE (did it take place)
WHY (did it happen)
HOW (did it happen)—only include this if there is space
Ex. This evening at about 10:00 p.m. at Malaya Hotel, the Senator, while at the lobby
with his family, was shot by an assassin, by a riding in tandem.
3. BODY of the news report gives more details and provides more information about
the WHY and HOW of the story.
4. TAIL contains the less important information which is often omitted by the
newspaper editor if there is not enough space left in the newspaper.
Hints:


Your News Report should be easy to understand; every news story should be able to
be read by a twelve-year-old learner.
Try to be fair–include both sides of the story and don’t let your opinion get in the way
of reporting the facts.
After having studied the parts of the news, it’s time for you to practise how much
you learn by watching this video clip on Facebook and take note of its most important
information.
Video Title: Jollibee branch na pinanggalingan ng fried towel na idineliver sa isang
customer, ipinasara muna
After watching, answer the following questions in 1-3 sentences only on a separate
sheet.
1. Who is/are involved?
2. What happened?
3. What is the reaction of the concerned?
4. When did it happen?
5. Where did it happen?
6. Why did it happen?
C. Engage:
I see that you are getting more ideas about this interesting topic. This
time, you are going to work as if you are your favorite news reporter. Are
you ready?
Directions: Recall your favorite news reporter or anchor. Imagine that
you are the said reporter. Explain in paragraph how you should value truthfulness and
fairness. You can support your answer by giving examples of your favorite show/s of this
news personality that aim/s to show truthful, fair, balanced, and interesting news. Use
a separate sheet for your answer. Don’t forget to write your name and section.

corresponding points—3 points—for each. Don’t forget to make a headline. Use a short
bond paper for this. Don’t forget to write your name and section.
