1. What was the Underground
Railroad?
The Underground Railroad was a
way for escaped slaves to enter
the north without being captured.
2. Why might former slaves, free
blacks and abolitionists help
runway slaves?
They wanted to abolish slavery,
and took every measure to make sure
that their friends, family, and even
complete strangers could be safe.
3. How might illiterate slaves learn
of escape routes if they couldn’t
read?
Other people telling them, or joining
other escapees
4. Besides Canada, what other areas
did former slaves escape to?
Any state in the Union that outlawed slavery; mainly away from the border.
5. Why do you think slaves often headed toward the Ohio River?
It was a quick way to get into New York, a free state.
6. What are three cities a former slave escaping from Nashville might pass through to get to Canada?
Louisville, Frankfort, and Columbus.
