ACTIVITY: IDENTIFY A PROBLEM WORTH SOLVING
1. You will go work with your groups, observe people, talk to them, and identify the top 3 problems that they are
facing.
2. Use the questions provided in this handout as cues on how to get this activity going.
3. You have 45 minutes to complete this activity.
Use the following questions to record your observations:
1. Go out, look around you, and identify a problem that you can spot. Explain the context as well.
The pandemic has proved itself to be a disastrous event that took us all by surprise. Suddenly, we were forced to
stay at our homes, reduce/halt any social activities to near-full restrictions and dramatically increase our physical
distance from one another. All of these are done in order to avoid getting sick by the infectious virus. However,
certain blow backs occurred with one of these being problems related to human transactions (utilities payment,
money sending etc.) that are normally conducted face to face. For example, payment of electric bill usually
comes at least once a month. During this time, a person fulfills his/her payment obligations at the nearest
MERALCO branch. Since there is a strict lockdown, the management of the building is expected to cater about at
most 50% of the usual number of clients inside the building. The reduction of physical transactions inside the
premises resulted in longer queuing lines (outside the premises) than usual, poor customer service, slow
transactions, strict regulations which many consider to be a hassle and other problems related to customer care
and transaction efficiency.
2. What opportunity can you perceive from the above problem?
On the bright side, the reduction of physical and essential transactions encouraged us to innovate other modes
of financial transaction. We see this as a great opportunity to create a system that practices no contact (physical)
transaction. With that, we came up with the creation of a website and mobile application that integrates a virtual
payment system. Our mobile app offers many features such as utilities (water, electric, tax etc.) payment, data
services (mobile load, pre paid, postpaid internet payment), money sending and receiving utility, entertainment
services (gaming pins, credits etc.) and other miscellaneous services. Now, people don’t have to worry about
getting infected or getting exhausted waiting in long lines for an indefinite amount of time. All it just takes is a tap
or click on their devices right from the comfort of their homes.
3. Who is the Customer?
Our online transaction process system (OLTPS) serves a wide array of customers. Since, we are basically a
platform for online payment, we cater to different individuals with different needs. From a working person paying
his/her water bill to an avid gamer buying game skins and items, online payments are the most effective and
efficient way for our customers.
4. What according to the customer are the main problems?
According to the customer, the main problem and concern is health. The well-being of both customers and
workers of remittance centers is at risk due to the virus. Various health protocols and standards are not met in
every payment center, as this puts the customers at great risk.
5. What is the job to be done?
The job to be done is to give secured and contactless service for the customers. The service provided may vary
from sending money, mobile loading, bills payment or even top-up of game credits with huge discounts and
minimum service fee.
6. What job is currently getting done?
Our online payment transaction acts as a payment method to transfer funds or money online top-up game
credits, and bills payment. Our service also has an Online Transaction Process (OLTP) that secures and protects
customer data.
7. How is the customer getting the job done today OR how is the customer addressing this problem today?
Using this application allows cashless payments for goods and services using credit cards, mobile phones, and
the internet. Cost and time savings, greater sales, and lower transaction costs are the key benefits of using online
payment.
8. Estimate the market size. Your assumption will do.
Our estimation that we can accommodate since it is a newly formed competitor company is around 20,000
people.
4. Summarize your output using this format. Prepare to present this during our lecture:
5. In case you have any questions, get in touch with your facilitator.
6. Provide a screenshot of your virtual group meeting:
