Success in school is strongly related to attendance and sometimes difficulties arise due to excessive absences. The intent of this letter is to help keep you informed of the district's attendance policies and procedures. An absence may be excused with a parent note that is turned in to the appropriate office within three school days after the student returns to school. However, unless the absence is for a statutorily allowed reason under the compulsory attendance laws, the district is not required to excuse any absence, even if the parent provides a note explaining the absence. Excessive absences, tardies and early check-outs, with a parent note, will be reviewed by the designated campus administrator and may require a parent conference to clarify the reason for the continued absences. A note for an absence from a medical practitioner turned in to the appropriate office within the three days will remain excused. The compulsory attendance law applies to students ages 6-19, as well as students enrolled in prekindergarten or kindergarten. We are concerned as your child has developed a pattern of absences. If these absences continue, your child or you, as a parent/guardian/custodian, could be in violation of the Texas Education Code and/or the Texas Family Code. If students incur unexcused absences on ten or more days or parts of days within a six-month period in the same school year, the district, in most circumstances, will refer the student to truancy court. In addition, a criminal complaint against the parent/guardian/custodian for Parent Contributing to Nonattendance may be filed in court. In accordance with the Texas Education Code, we are required to remind you that it is your parental duty to monitor the student's school attendance and require the student to attend school. Additionally, the district has now initiated truancy prevention measures in an effort to address this attendance issue. Alvin ISD encourages parents to utilize Skyward Family Access, a web-based service that allows parents and authorized family members to view attendance records, schedules, grades, and progress reports. When parents and teachers work together with up-to-date information, they can better plan for the student's educational future.
