• It is characterized by the prevalence of oral communication.

The Age of Literacy
• Humans learned how to read and write.
• They also became more visual and rational.

The Gutenberg Press was invented.
The Gutenberg Bible (1455) was published.
Books and papers were reproduced.
The first American newspaper (1690) appeared.
Knowledge is no longer restricted because sharing of ideas became
faster, and acquiring information became easier.
• Through printing, people were cultivated with a sense of
homogeneity, which made it easier for a person to associate himself
with a group.

• There was a dominance of the electronic
media, such as telegraph, radio, film, and
television.
• It is considered as a force that turned
the planet into a global village.
• The movement further extended and
enabled a person to be at one with
humankind.
• Personal computers (1975) were
invented.

• World Wide Web (1991) began.
• Products and services that provide information or entertainment using
computers or the Internet emerged.
• Through this age, almost everyone can access unlimited quantities of
information.
• It marked a major turnaround in communication, transforming the end
users of media from being mere receivers of messages into
senders who are also able to create content themselves.
• There is already interactive communication, which uses feedback to
modify a message as it is presented.

• La Independencia (1898)- most widely read
newspaper during the Revolution

AMERICAN PERIOD

• A newspaper was still in the limelight.
• The Manila Times (1898), Official Gazette (1902), and Manila
Daily Bulletin (1900)
• The first broadcast radio was introduced in the Philippines.
• KZKZ (1922), run by Henry Herman Sr., was the first established radio
in the Philippines.
• K stands as the call letter of the radio station that period since we
were a colony of the USA.

• It was then changed to D when Francisco “Koko” Trinidad, the
Father of Philippine Radio, requested the International
Telecommunication Union to change the letter when we obtained
our freedom from the Americans.

• The Japanese disbanded all publications, except those used by the
Japanese Government.
• However, there were still underground papers produced to deliver
phenomena during this period.
