The Science of Bubbles

What 3 things are bubbles
made of?
1) Water
2) Air
3) Soap
Surface Tension
Water has very high surface tension
”Tension” at the “surface” means that
water does not like to break apart

So We Need SOAP
Soap has two parts:
A part that attracts water (hydrophilic)
A part that repels water (hydrophobic)
Because of this, it can push water
molecules apart
So: Soap decreases water’s surface
tension, allowing it to stretch and
become a sphere
Why a Sphere?
Water has high surface tension, so it
does not want to stretch
Spheres have the lowest possible
surface area of all shapes
So it stretches apart the least!
Why Do Bubbles Pop?
The soap in the bubble is drawn to
other objects or bubbles
So the bubble will pop when it touches
something
OR
Because the water inside evaporates!
So there’s nothing to hold air inside.
Today we’re making
bubble art!
