Interprofessional Collaboration
RESEARCH
- a detailed study of a new
subject, especially in order to
discover new information or
reach a new understanding
EVIDENCE
- the available body of facts
or information indicating
whether a belief or
proposition is true or valid.
Data Sheet
RESEARCH-BASED PRACTICE
requires a practice setting that
promotes the use of knowledge,
access to current scientific
knowledge, and the ability of
the clinician to think critically
about using the knowledge to
positively affect patient
outcomes.
EVIDENCE-BASED
PRACTICE
is the conscientious
and judicious use of
current best evidence
in conjunction with
clinical expertise and
patient values to
guide health care
decisions.

IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH AND
EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE IN HEALTHCARE

it aims to provide the most effective care
that is available, with the aim of improving
patient outcomes.
promotes an attitude of inquiry in health
professionals and starts us thinking about:
Why am I doing this in this way? Is there
evidence that can guide me to do this in a
more effective way?
leads to the generation of new knowledge
EXAMPLES OF RESEARCH AND
EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE IN HEALTHCARE
Oxygen Therapy and COPD Patients
BEFORE: It was once believed that providing
oxygen to COPD patients could lead to serious
health issues such as hypercarbia and acidosis.
Some even believed it could lead to death.
NOW: Today, a significant evidence-based
protocol is to provide oxygen to patients with
COPD to prevent hypoxia and organ failure.
EXAMPLES OF RESEARCH AND
EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE IN HEALTHCARE
Adolescent Patients in Inpatient Care
BEFORE: Daily bathing in adolescent patients is
not advisable.
NOW: Because of evidence-based research,
nurses today know that children in inpatient
care benefit from daily bathing with 2%
chlorhexidine gluconate.
EXAMPLES OF RESEARCH AND
EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE IN HEALTHCARE
Stress Reduction in Nurses
BEFORE: It was not given enough attention.
NOW: One proven practice is Mindfulness-Based
Stress Reduction (MBSR), which seeks to reduce
“psychological
distress
among
nurses.”
According to a National Library of
Medicine article, studies found MBSR reduces
stress, anxiety, and depression among nurses.
