Description In 2019, China's merchandise trade surplus amounted to around 421.9 billion U.S. dollars. The surplus value dropped significantly since 2015 when it reached a record high of nearly 594 billion U.S. dollars. In 2015, the U.S. bilateral goods trade deficit with China accounted for around two-thirds of China's total merchandise trade surplus. Trade balance and partners The merchandise trade balance is the value of exported goods minus the value of imported goods. A positive value indicates a trade surplus, while a negative value indicates a trade deficit. In 2019, Chinese imports of goods amounted to approximately 2.1 trillion U.S. dollars, whereas total exports added up to about 2.5 trillion U.S. dollars. In contrast, China`s invisible trade balance , an indicator measuring services and government transfers between countries, closed with a deficit and ranged at about -292 billion U.S. dollars at the end of 2018. Being an economy heavily reliant on export, China ranked first among countries with the highest trade surplus in 2018, followed by Germany and Russia. The United States, with imports exceeding exports by approximately 950 billion U.S. dollars that year, ranked first among leading import countries worldwide . In 2019, the value of the U.S. imports from China exceeded the exports to China by around 345.6 billion U.S. dollars. Another important trade partner for China is the European Union. In 2019, the EU imported 82 percent more from China than they exported there , showing a trade deficit of 163 billion euros. Product categories with the highest trade deficit a year earlier were mostly finished goods such as machinery and transport equipment, clothing, and other manufactures, whereas product categories with a more balanced trade sheet consisted of raw materials and agricultural products to a large extent. Apart from being the most populous country , China has also become the largest manufacturing economy and the largest exporter in the world . European Union and United States were China's leading export partners in 2019. Machinery such as computers, broadcasting technology, and telephones as well as transport equipment make up the largest part of Chinese exports . This category amounted to approximately 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars in export value in 2018. When it comes to primary goods, food and live animals used for food are the main export products . According to the IMF, China`s total gross domestic product (GDP) had ranged at over nine trillion U.S. dollars that year. Thus, exports of goods had accounted for more than 24 percent of China`s total economic output in 2013. Meanwhile, China`s trade surplus amounted to 259 billion U.S. dollars and surged to record high of 594 billion U.S. dollars in 2015. Over the past years, China has steadily moved up the global value chain by increasing the export share of high technology products such as computers and power devices. China has been frequently accused of currency manipulation by other countries. The country is criticized for deliberately keeping its currency yuan undervalued, in order to give Chinese goods export advantages. This indicated a decrease in the volume of passenger car export and an increase in commercial vehicle export compared to the previous year. Automobile manufacturing industry in China Since a few years back, China has been the world`s largest car producing country. Over one quarter of the global passenger car production was manufactured in China in 2019, exceeding the overall share of the European Union. First and foremost, car production in China is set to satisfy domestic car demand as only about four percent of passenger cars manufactured in China were destined for export markets . Chinese car exports In other national car markets, Chinese car brands enjoy a significant cost advantage over imported cars from international automobile manufacturers. Thus, other developing countries and emerging markets were the main export destinations for Chinese vehicle exports as of 2016. Although exports of Chinese car brands have increased rapidly over the past decade, it is still a long way for China to become a car export powerhouse. Vehicles made in China have not posed a threat to Japanese or European auto makers internationally since Chinese exports are more concentrated in low-end market segments.
