Description
In 2019, China's merchandise trade surplus amounted to around 421.9 billion U.S. dollars. The surplus value
dropped significantly since 2015 when it reached a record high of nearly 594 billion U.S. dollars. In 2015, the
U.S. bilateral goods trade deficit with China accounted for around two-thirds of China's total merchandise trade
surplus. Trade balance and partners The merchandise trade balance is the value of exported goods minus the
value of imported goods. A positive value indicates a trade surplus, while a negative value indicates a trade
deficit. In 2019, Chinese imports of goods amounted to approximately 2.1 trillion U.S. dollars, whereas total
exports added up to about 2.5 trillion U.S. dollars. In contrast, China`s invisible trade balance , an indicator
measuring services and government transfers between countries, closed with a deficit and ranged at about -292
billion U.S. dollars at the end of 2018. Being an economy heavily reliant on export, China ranked first among
countries with the highest trade surplus in 2018, followed by Germany and Russia. The United States, with
imports exceeding exports by approximately 950 billion U.S. dollars that year, ranked first among leading import
countries worldwide . In 2019, the value of the U.S. imports from China exceeded the exports to China by around
345.6 billion U.S. dollars. Another important trade partner for China is the European Union. In 2019, the EU
imported 82 percent more from China than they exported there , showing a trade deficit of 163 billion euros.
Product categories with the highest trade deficit a year earlier were mostly finished goods such as machinery
and transport equipment, clothing, and other manufactures, whereas product categories with a more balanced
trade sheet consisted of raw materials and agricultural products to a large extent.

Description
In 2019, China exported approximately 2.5 trillion U.S. dollars worth of goods. This indicated a growth in export
value of less than one percent compared to the previous year. Export of goods from China China`s exports have
been growing steadily over the past decade, with the exception of 2009 when financial crisis and global
economic downturn slowed down global trade and 2016 witnessing another decrease in global demand. Apart
from being the most populous country , China has also become the largest manufacturing economy and the
largest exporter in the world . European Union and United States were China's leading export partners in 2019.
Machinery such as computers, broadcasting technology, and telephones as well as transport equipment make
up the largest part of Chinese exports . This category amounted to approximately 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars in
export value in 2018. When it comes to primary goods, food and live animals used for food are the main export
products .

*From 2020, the source started grouping figures for January and February
together to curb the influence of the Chinese New Year on the statistic.
Chinese New Year falls between January 21 and February 21.
Description
In December 2020, Chinese exports amounted to around 281.9 billion U.S. dollars. This indicated an increase in
exports compared to the same period of the previous year. Export trade in China China overtook the United
States as the world`s largest trading nation in 2013, when China`s export value of goods hit a record high of
roughly two trillion U.S. dollars. According to the IMF, China`s total gross domestic product (GDP) had ranged at
over nine trillion U.S. dollars that year. Thus, exports of goods had accounted for more than 24 percent of
China`s total economic output in 2013. Meanwhile, China`s trade surplus amounted to 259 billion U.S. dollars
and surged to record high of 594 billion U.S. dollars in 2015. Since the implementation of various reform
strategies in 1979, China`s economic development has largely profited from its export-led growth strategy. In
2019, the most important export partners for China were the European Union and the United States. Automatic
data processing machines, textiles, and mobile phones were among China`s top export goods . It is noticeable
that China`s comparative advantage nowadays lies not only in labor-intensive manufactured goods. Over the
past years, China has steadily moved up the global value chain by increasing the export share of high
technology products such as computers and power devices. China has been frequently accused of currency
manipulation by other countries. The country is criticized for deliberately keeping its currency yuan undervalued,
in order to give Chinese goods export advantages.

Description
In 2020, the European Union countries imported approximately 15.1 percent of the Chinese export volume. In
that year, United States was the largest Chinese merchandise importer. Distribution of Chinese exports In 2020,
China exported goods with a total value of more than 17.9 trillion yuan and imported goods with a value of 14.2
trillion yuan. That year, China ranked second among the countries with the largest gross domestic product ,
following the United States. China`s economic prosperity has been closely related to its status as the world`s
factory. For about a decade between 2005 and 2015, exports contributed more than 20 percent to China`s gross
domestic product . However, the share of exports to GDP contribution is currently on the decline. Nonetheless,
China maintains a trade surplus of about 351 billion U.S. dollars and remains first among countries with the
highest trade surplus worldwide as of 2017. While China displays high growth potential for service exports such
as tourism, transportation, banking and financial services, as well as insurance and education services, the main
focus of China`s export industry remains merchandise. In 2019, Chinese merchandise exports made up 13.2
percent of all global exports , whereas service based exports contributed only 4.6 percent. In terms of most
exported merchandise categories, food and live animals used for food were the main primary goods . Among the
manufactured goods, automatic data processing machines, textile, and apparel were the categories with the
highest export value in China in 2020.

In 2020, around 235,000 commercial vehicles and 760,000 passenger cars were exported from China. This
indicated a decrease in the volume of passenger car export and an increase in commercial vehicle export
compared to the previous year. Automobile manufacturing industry in China Since a few years back, China has
been the world`s largest car producing country. Over one quarter of the global passenger car production was
manufactured in China in 2019, exceeding the overall share of the European Union. First and foremost, car
production in China is set to satisfy domestic car demand as only about four percent of passenger cars
manufactured in China were destined for export markets . Chinese car exports In other national car markets,
Chinese car brands enjoy a significant cost advantage over imported cars from international automobile
manufacturers. Thus, other developing countries and emerging markets were the main export destinations for
Chinese vehicle exports as of 2016. Although exports of Chinese car brands have increased rapidly over the
past decade, it is still a long way for China to become a car export powerhouse. Vehicles made in China have
not posed a threat to Japanese or European auto makers internationally since Chinese exports are more
concentrated in low-end market segments.
