Name Date FORCES AND MOTION Friction is a force of resistance that happens when one surface or object touches another. When two rough surfaces rub against each other and are difficult to move, like sandpaper dragging across uneven wood, there is a high amount of friction. Low friction is when two smooth surfaces move easily against each other, like when a melting ice cube slides across a counter top. Sometimes high friction is helpful, and other times it is not. Likewise, sometimes low friction is helpful and other times it is not. Think about examples of high and low friction in the world around you. Alone or with a partner, fill in this chart.
