LITERACY
Literacy is defined as
acquiring the ability to
read, write and
understand.
It is entirely concerned
with the art of reading
and writing.
TYPES OF
LITERACIES
MEDIA LITERACY
-is the ability to access,
analyze, evaluate, and
create media.
FINANCIAL LITERACY
CULTURAL LITERACY
is the ability to understand how money
works in the world: how someone
manages to earn and make it, how that
person manages it, how he/she invest
it and how that person donates it to
help others.
Cultural literacy is an
analogy to literacy proper.
The culturally literate
person is able to talk and
understand others of that
culture with fluency.
TYPES OF
LITERACIES
DIGITAL LITERACY
is the knowledge, skills and
behaviors used in a broad rage of
digital devices such as smart phones,
tablets, laptops and desktop PC’s, all
of which are seen network rather
that computing devices.
SCIENTIFIC LITERACY
is the knowledge and understanding
of scientific concepts and processes
required for personal decision
making, participation in civic and
cultural affairs, and economic
productivity.
INFORMATION LITERACY
is a set of abilities requiring
individuals to “recognize when
information is needed and have the
ability to locate, evaluate, and use
effectively the needed information.

Philippines
About 91.6 percent Filipinos 10 to
64 years old were functional
literate in 2019, according to the
results of the 2019 Functional
Literacy, Education and Mass
Media Survey (FLEMMS).
IMPORTANCE OF
LITERACY
•Students need literacy in order to engage with the
written word in everyday life.
• reading and writing skills is important in everyday
life.
•literacy plays a vital role in transforming students
into socially engaged citizens.

Education is defined as the systematic
process of facilitating learning, receiving,

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
EDUCATION AND LITERACY
Literacy is the ability to write, read and understand
while Education is a broader concept which takes into
consideration the all-round development of a human
personality.
The main purpose of education is to direct a person’s
behavior, while literacy is one of the tools in that
direction.
