Persuade Inform Entertain Persuade - To convince a reader to believe an idea or to take a course of action, the author uses persuasive writing. - Make someone believe in something - Change someone’s mind - “I think that pie is the best dessert, ever!” What does persuasion look like? “I think that …” - Appeals to your emotions “I believe that …” - Scare tactics “I feel that …” - Using humor “I need …” - “Favorite” things “I want …” Inform - When an author writes to inform their readers, they are giving them facts and information so they can learn something new. - Share relevant information about real topics and facts. - The average American eats six slices of pie each year” What does Inform look like? - Numbers - Refers to specific events - Dates - References real people, places, events - Examples - Real world topics Entertain The author is sharing information that you will enjoy as well as keep your attention. - “One day I was outside picking blackberries to make my pie, the sun was shinning, the birds were chirping, and the berries were sweet” What does entertain look like? - Usage of pictures - The story gives you a feeling; happy, sad, scared - The story makes you laugh - Holds you in suspense - The author wants you to feel as if you’re apart of the story. - Use of strong punctuation !!!!
