TASK ONE
● Individual Research
Report
● Team Multimedia
Presentation
1
PT 1 DETAILS - 20% of your AP SCORE
IRR - 1200 word paper
●
●
●
●
●
Investigate your assigned approach
(perspective/lens) on this issue on the
team’s research question.
Summarize, explain, analyze, & evaluate
the main ideas in the chosen sources.
Identify, compare and interpret a range
of perspectives about a problem or issue.
Cite all sources
●
●
●
TMP - 8-10 minutes + Oral Defense
Consider the research & analyses of your
team members for the purpose of
proposing one or more solutions or
resolutions.
Together, synthesize & evaluate findings
and perspectives to create a collective
understanding of different approaches to
the problem
Consider potential solutions or resolutions &
conduct additional research to evaluate
solutions
Propose one or more solutions or
resolutions and prepare an argument to
2
support the proposal
MY ROLE
WHAT Ms. Alicja CAN DO:
● Help form your groups
● Ensure you are aware of tasks, timeline, components,
and scoring criteria (rubric)
● Explore issues, discuss topics & perspectives, and ask
questions
● Continue whole-class teaching of skills
● Encourage you!!!!
3
MY ROLE
WHAT Ms. Alicja CAN’T DO:
● Assign, provide, distribute, or generate your research
questions.
● Conduct or provide research/articles/evidence
● Write, revise, amend or correct your work
● Give specific direct feedback to individual groups
● Reveal which oral defense questions you will receive
prior to the presentation.
4
DEVELOP SOME GROUP NORMS
What rules are going to govern
how your team works?
Consider:
●
●
●
●
●
Expectations: work, communication, &
deadlines
What you will do if expectations are NOT
met (remediation and consequences)
How you will conduct discussions and make
decisions
How you will help one another
How you will discover each person’s
strengths and use them to your advantage
5
(use task directions & identify)
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO INVESTIGATE?
● Need to identify a REAL WORLD problem or issue to research and
eventually come up with proposed solution(s) or resolution(s)
● Advice & Suggestions:
○ Avoid simple pro/con issues and questions
■ Distinguish a “debate” vs. a debatable problem
■ need to address nuances/complexity of the issue while still
keeping it focused and manageable
○ Approach a LOCAL issue or problem - more relevant!
○ Use preliminary searches to define & understand the issue first
○ But, need to find a solution vs. just defining the problem

A Good Question:
Open Ended (not Y/N - avoid Pro/Con???)
Focused
Requires Judgment
Debatable
Researchable
Manageable Scope
Uses Clear Vocabulary
Has Multiple Perspectives → several solutions/resolutions
VIDEO: Research Questions Worth Answering

QUESTION STEMS to start with
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
What is the cause of __________?
What are the effects of _____________?
What are the results of ____________?
Should __________ do ____________ (this or that)?
How can _____________ most effectively ___________?
How should _________ to prevent/ensure ___________?
To what extent does _____________ cause _____________?
To what extent should ________________________?
9
Put your
question
to the test
10
Examining Your Question
11
How to Refine Research Questions
● Refer to shared assumptions made by others on the topic
and existing conditions relevant to the issue
● Give focus by replacing vague words with more specific
words or phrases
● Conduct preliminary searches to test research question -- too
many? Too few?
12
Sample Question
● Topic: Climate Change
○ Explore: Sectors and choose a narrow focus: Agriculture
● Problem: Climate change has affected agriculture, especially in terms of
soil quality and water availability, thereby reducing crop yields.
● Question: How should farming practices be changed in order to combat the
negative effects of climate change on agricultural crop yields?
● Solution Approach: How best to mitigate the negative effects of climate change
on soil and water and find novel ways to increase crop yields
○ i.e., hydroponics, urban agriculture, irrigation efficiency, vertical
farming, and small local organic farms
13
Assign lenses/perspectives for research
Three options:
● Lenses
● Potential Solutions
● Stakeholders
14
Identify Context & Stakeholders (backside)
● Answer the questions regarding context:
○
○
○
○
Purpose/intent? (What question will you attempt to answer?)
Audience?
“So What?” / establish importance
Background/situation - define problem/issue & situate in a larger context
● Brainstorm possible stakeholders from various lenses
○ Can organize/divide work by: lens, perspectives or potential solutions
○ ASSIGN lenses/stakeholders/perspectives to each person for the IRR after
you do some preliminary research
15
Using your Question - research
reminders:
● LENS: A narrowed filter through which a topic can be examined
● PERSPECTIVE: A point of view conveyed through an argument
○ when a CLAIM is made, a perspective/opinion is initiated
○ Point of view from a stakeholder
● CONTEXT: The intent, audience, purpose, bias, situatedness, and/or
background (larger environment) of a source or reference
○ Typically INFLUENCES perspective
○ Answers “So What?” & “Why should we care?”
16
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS to Problems
CHOOSE A SIDE:
__________________________________________________________________
END or STOP IT
MITIGATE/REDUCE
the negative effects
17
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS to Problems
Solutions - options
● Propose several, but accept the one that successfully
addresses the most factors with the fewest limitations
● Propose 1 short term and 1 long term solution
● Propose 1 local, 1 state, 1 national solution
Need to bring out “nuance” of each solution = limitations and implications
18
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
What is the cause of __________?
What are the effects of _____________?
What are the results of ____________?
Should __________ do ______________
(this or that)?
How can ____ most effectively ______?
How should ___________ to
prevent/ensure _______________?
To what extent does _____ cause ____?
To what extent should _____________?
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
How to eliminate the causes
How to reduce the effects
How to mitigate the results
How best to do something/make
it work/prevent harmful effects
How best to do something
How best to stop or reduce
effects (either side, but pick one!)
How best to reduce causes
How best to stop or mitigate the
19
negative results
Arguments of Proposal (problem/solution) CAUTION--Just adding “TO WHAT EXTENT….” does not automatically make
it a good proposal (problem/solution) research question
i.e., “Does climate change cause lower agricultural crop yields?” (Yes/No) →
“To what extent does climate change cause lower agricultural crop yields?”
The answer to this question will help to define the causes of low crop yields, but the answer will not
offer solutions on how to fix it unless narrowed to specific causes and what to do about them.
Be careful of “IS” and “DOES” and “CAUSE” in your question.... Could lead you astray
to an INFORMATIVE essay, a DEFINITION argument, or a CAUSATIONAL argument
instead of a PROPOSAL argument (PROBLEM/SOLUTION). These words may lead
to a problem/solution argument, but it might just be a leap to get there…
