JENNYBELL CHA SOCIAL STUDIES MAJOR Santa Cruz Institute Santa Cruz, Marinduque College of Education Chapter I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND I .Introduction Water is a colorless, transparent, odourless, tasteless liquid that forms the seas, lakes, rivers, and rain and is the basis of the fluids of living organisms. Water is one of the main needs and most precious resources that people need to live, but they forget how to keep them well that cause water scarcity or water shortage . Water scarcity is the lack of sufficient available water resources to meet the demands of water shortage within a region. Water scarcity involves water crisis, water shortage, water deficit or water stress. Water shortage refers to a situation were natural resources are unable to meet a region demand and economic water shortage is a result of poor water management resources. Water scarcity can be due to physical water shortage. Water shortage affects every continent and around 2.8 billion people around the world at least one amount out of every year. More than 1.2 billion people lack access to clean drinking water. According to the United Nations Development Programme, the latter is found more often to be the cause or regions experience in water scarcity, as most countries or regions have enough water to meet household, industrial, agricultural and environmental needs, but lack the means to provide it in a accessible manner. The water scarcity in Barangay Bagong-silang Santa Cruz Marinduque greatly affects every household that are living there. It cause the difficulties of obtaining sources of fresh water for use during of period of time. Santa Cruz Institute Santa Cruz, Marinduque College of Education According to Mr. Rustico Reynoso barangay captain of barangay bagongsilang, the water supply become inconvenient because of the climate change, such as altered weather patterns including El Nino, the increase of the consumer or human demand and needing the leakage of the water pipes. The cause of water shortage have a great impact to the people and it affects a big amount of disturbances in life. II . THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK A well known American Psychologist, Abraham Maslow ,stated in his ‘’Theory of Motivation ‘’ that the physical needs of human beings is the most important requirements after social needs. This is the main reason of people why they need Psychological to satisfy their physical needs. According to Uri Shamir and Charles D.D Howard , water supply system reliability can be defined in terms of the shortages that results failure or for selected time period can be defined in terms of the capacity lost during failure ,which is measured as a fraction of the demand rate or the demand volume, can be increased by adding facilities ,storage, pumping capacity and pipelines. According to Howard and Bartram(2003) a minimum of 50 litres per capita and day (LPCD) is required to fulfill the needs for consumption and assure hygiene . They states that on average 5L per day are needed for drinking water, 10L for food preparation 35L for bathing and sanitation . The water supply in those parts of the world without water shortages should orientate toward the optimal access of 100 LPCD and mare to allow all the needs of an individual to be met. III. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM This particular study aims to determine the Cause of Water Shortage in Brgy. Bagong Silang Santa Cruz Marinduque. Bagong Silang Santa cruz Marinduque ? 2. How do the residence of Brgy. Bagong Silang reacts on this kind of situation ? 3. What are the possible solution to prevent water shortage in Brgy . Bagong Silang ? 1.3 HYPOTHESIS The researcher formulated in her study “ The Cause of Water shortage in Brgy Bagong Silang Santa Cruz Marinduque’’ that the cause of water shortage are the climate change , leaking the pipes , and increase human demand that can affectin Brgy Bagong Silang . IV.SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY RESIDENTS- the result of this study will make them to realized that the lack of water shortage of the people does not lie on the capacity of every household . They have to conserve the water because it is very important thing in our daily lives. It can help them to prevent water shortage. This subject is the community of Brgy. Bagong Silang. VI.DEFINITION OF TERMS In order to understand clearly the manuscript, the researcher defines the following concepts. Climate change –refer to a change average conditions or in the time variation of weather within the context of longer term conditions. EL-NINO- is a climate phenomenon that accurs when a vast pool of water in the western tropical Ocean becomes abnormally warm.
