BICOL UNIVERSITY GRADUATE SCHOOL LEGAZPI ALBAY MaReadEd 212 – Effective Practices in Reading Education 1st Semester, 2020 - 2021 Name: Program: Professor: ARGIE R. ARANDIA Master of Arts in Reading Education Dr. Rebecca R. Bercasio During this pandemic crisis, the government imposed distance learning in all schools here in our country. Under the umbrella of distance learning is online learning. Where in, learners and teachers met in a specific online platform to talk about on a certain topic. The minimum requirement for students to participate in an online course is access to a computer, the Internet, and the motivation to succeed in a non-traditional classroom. Parents have a big role, in making their children motivated in achieving academic excellence in e-learning. On my virtual demo teaching, I realized that online learning is quite challenging for the teacher. As a teacher, we need to be more familiar with the features of the online platform that we will be using, in order to have a meaningful and fun discussion to our student. We also need to plan out the lessons ahead of time with syllabus, assignments, rubrics, and resources should be posted on the site in advance, so that students can make the most of flexibility of online courses to work ahead as needed. Being an online teacher, we can’t see our learners right away. We don’t know if they are still listening to the discussion or doing other stuff. Based on my experience as an online teacher, we need to ask our learners to open their web cam, just to make sure that they are still there and listening attentively to the discussion. We also need to call their names one at a time, and make sure that all the learners should take part in the discussion. Power point presentation is very useful in doing online classes because it helps to improve the student’s focus. PowerPoint allows us to use images, audio and video to have a greater visual impact. These visual and audio cues may also help a presenter be more improvisational and interactive with the learner. It is also easier to engage our learners by using striking images that can hold on to their attention, while clear bullet points or summary text helps them follows the logic of a presentation. To sum up everything, the virtual demo lesson went well. The comments and feedback of the viewer’s will serve as an eye opener for me as a virtual demo teacher to improve more and sustain the best practices that the viewers observed. In delivering the lesson to the learner, we should still follow the techniques and strategies that we’re doing in the traditional classroom set up. As a teacher we have to remember the POISE framework! Be Prepared, manage Objective, keep the lesson Interesting and Simple and set Expectations. VIEWER’S FEEDBACK FORM
