Alexis Wysocki It has always been my desire to become a nurse and help others in need. The past five years I have been working with children from babysitting, daycares and now I am currently working at Bright Beginnings Learning Center. This is a school for children from kindergarten to fifth grade who have special needs that might include disabilities like down syndrome, autism, and muscular dystrophy. I knew when I accepted this job that it would be challenging but helping these kids brings joy to my day. I am an instructional aide who works one-on-one with a young boy named Aahil, who has autism and is non verbal. I help him navigate and communicate through his ipad using an app called TouchChat. Touchchat is designed for individuals who have conditions that affect their ability to speak. Despite the difficulties in everyday communication, working in this environment has taught me many things including patience, awareness and a passion for helping others. My passion for helping others continues after work due to the fact that I take care of my nana who has been in and out of the hospital this past year. I have been living at my nanas house for the past two years taking care of her and monitoring her vitals daily. She is eighty seven and unfortunately she's having problems performing basic tasks without help such as making meals and remembering to take her pills. Aside from cooking and giving her pills, I also take her pulse rate, blood pressure, check her oxygen level and put all the information into the telehealth so it can be sent to her doctor regularly. These two aspects in my life play a major role on why I want to follow my passion and pursue my career as a nurse. Helping out the children at my school and my nana at home has taught me that helping others generates happiness. I would like to apply my pre-existing skills towards becoming a nurse and expand on those skills to provide better care for individuals who may be injured or sick and make a positive impact on their life. I am prepared for the many challenges that I will have to face and am eager to expand my knowledge in the medical field.
