It covers the entire discussions for the finals and is divided into four units; Units 5, 6, 7, & 8. The topics are the Covenant and Liberation, The Vocation of Prophetic Life, The Public Ministry Of Jesus His Life And Suffering, and The Resurrection Of Christ. Each unit has a respective activity which is taken from the topics provided. Motivation Have you ever been in loved? How does it feel? Well, I am very much convinced that man is a loving being, and so are you. When you are in love, you tend to give your all for the person you are in love with because you want your relationship to last as much as you can. But time is not always friendly, most of us can call it unfair. We experience being broken, and it really hurts. We cry because of the pain of losing someone we love, the one whom we exerted much of our time, effort, and undeniably even our money. We feel pain even more when we remember the promises we made that ended up being broken. But some are happy when their relationship is over because they are freed from the chain that was choking them for a long time. However, nothing is sweeter than the covenant made by God with His people. Out of this covenant, man is liberated from evil and sin and this liberation is incomparable to any liberation experienced by man. The question is, do you find liberation in having faith in God? Does this faith brings you into a higher and wider understanding on what is happening in your daily life as a person in spite of the painful experiences that you had which may lead you even to the point of giving up? Man, you are chosen and love by God, and he had already freed you from anything that pulls you down. Now, it is time for you to give something, to cling to Him, because He is the only one who cannot cheat on you nor breaks your heart, but He loves you more than you can even imagine. Viray TOPIC 1 THE PROMISE FULFILLED IN JESUS CHRIST The Church, as early as apostolic times (Cf. 1 Cor. 10: 6,11; Heb 10: l; l Pet 3: 21), and then constantly in her Tradition, has illuminated the unity of the divine plan in the two Testaments through typology, which discerns in God's works of the Old Covenant prefiguration of what he accomplished in the fullness of time in the person of his incarnate Son. The Annunciation It inaugurates the fulfillment of God’s promises and preparations. By saying “yes” to God’s word, Mary becomes the mother of Jesus and initiates the redemption of the world. Luke 1:26-38 Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mary, without human seed. Mary remained a virgin throughout her entire life. Her virginity is the sign of her perfect faith and total consecration to God’s will. CCC 484-486 The Incarnation: The Birth of the Messiah But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law.” (Gal 4:4) Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the City of David, because he is of the house of David. Jesus – the Prince of Peace – is born in a stable, into a poor and humble Jewish family. Lk . 2:1-5, CCC 525526 THIS MODULE IS FOR THE EXCLUSIVE USE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LA SALETTE, INC. CCC 457-460 To save us by reconciling us with God: God wills all to be saved, and so he has made it possible. But we must look for the means of salvation: where we spend eternity is our choice. To show us the Father’s Love To be our Model of Holiness To make us share in God’s life Nature of Jesus Christ: Truly Man, Truly God Jesus is not part God and part man. He became truly man while remaining truly God Jesus is Truly Human He is born of a woman He grows in strength and wisdom. He experiences hunger and thirst He eats He gets tired. He has a physical body He sleeps. THIS MODULE IS FOR THE EXCLUSIVE USE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LA SALETTE, INC. Viray TOPIC 2 JESUS’ MINISTRY AND CALL OF DISCIPLES Proclamation of God’s Kingdom Jesus begins his public ministry when he reads a passage from Isaiah. “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Jesus begins his preaching by calling men to repentance for “The kingdom of heaven is at hand”. “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel." The many parables of Jesus tell us about different aspects of the kingdom of God and Christian discipleship. Jesus Chooses Disciples Jesus calls twelve disciples to participate in his mission. He sends them out to preach the Gospel of the kingdom of Heaven. THIS MODULE IS FOR THE EXCLUSIVE USE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LA SALETTE, INC. Viray TOPIC 3 THE SUFFERING AND DEATH OF CHRIST Paschal Mystery Jesus Is Obedient Unto Death In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus accepts the cup from the Father, “obedient onto death.” His death is redemptive. “And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” (Lk. 22: 44) Jesus Performs a Supreme Sacrifice At the Last Supper, Jesus foretold the free giving of his life; the Eucharist is the memorial of his sacrifice, and his apostles were instituted as priests of the New Covenant. Jesus Dies Jesus truly died; he experienced the separation of his soul from his body, for everyone. “He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken” (Is. 53: 8) “And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.” (Lk. 23: 46) THIS MODULE IS FOR THE EXCLUSIVE USE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LA SALETTE, INC. Viray The Death of Jesus 451 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[a] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b] 47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.” 48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.” 50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. 51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[c] went into the holy city and appeared to many people. 54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!” Readings ( Mark 15:42-47, Luke 23:50-57, Mark 15:21-41 ) CFC, 563-576 The Seven Last Words Of Jesus On The Cross 1. Luke 23:46 As a catholic we have devotion to the suffering Jesus and the dead Jesus taken down from the cross is very popular among Filipinos. Among other Holy Week practices like Pasyon, chanted throughout Holy Week, the Senakulo, dramatization of Christ’s final week, the Station of the Cross every Good Friday and the Flagellants, a declining group of penitents, go so far as to re-enact the crucifixion itself by nailing a willing victim to a cross. The whole earthly life of Christ came to its climax in his Paschal Mystery. The cross of Christ is the symbol of salvation. The cross is the symbol not only of Christ’s saving power, but also of our true selves. The Cross: Symbol of Saving Love. THIS MODULE IS FOR THE EXCLUSIVE USE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LA SALETTE, INC. Viray TOPIC 1 THE GLORIFIED CHRIST The Resurrection Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? (NRSV) The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.” (NRSV Then he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?” (NRSV) Jesus appears again to his disciples. He is not a ghost; his disciples touch him, and he eats. His body is glorified, not limited by space and time, but able to be present how and when he wills. Christ Ascends into Heaven When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? Images of Heaven Life, light, peace, wedding feast, wine of the kingdom, the Father’s house, the heavenly Jerusalem, paradise. Heaven: Made Righteous Nothing unclean will enter heaven.” We are not only considered righteous (snow-covered dunghill), but must be made righteous. We are purified through suffering, and must labor until Christ is fully formed in us. Jesus is with the Father and Intercedes for Us Jesus is the High Priest of the New and Eternal Covenant. He intercedes for us at the right hand of the Father. But filled with the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.” “God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places.” THIS MODULE IS FOR THE EXCLUSIVE USE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LA SALETTE, INC.
