Summary of Networking Devices
Name : Raghav Sharma
Reg No: 20BBS0048
Repeaters:
It operates at Physics layers.
It amplifies or regenerate the signals.
It is used to avoid transmission loss.
They are also known as signal boosters.
No. of ports are usually 2 ports.
They are generally used to connect computers in a LAN.
Hub:
It is Multiport Repeater
It operates in Physical Layer.
It is used to avoid transmission loss.
It is used to connect multiple devices in a network.
They are generally used to connect computers in a LAN.
A hub has many ports in it.
Bridge
Operates at the Data Link Layer.
Whenever Larger network to break into smaller network, to connect smaller networks with each
other bridge is used.
It connects two LAN
A bridge is a network device that connects multiple LANs (local area networks) together to
form a larger LAN.
Switches
Multiport Bridge.
Have more number of ports than Bridge.
Used in Security Purpose using filtering option.
A switch is a data link layer networking device which connects devices in a network
and uses packet switching to send and receive data over the network.
Like a hub, a switch also has many ports, to which computers are plugged in.
Eg. Used in CCTV Camera.
Router:
When we want to connect LAN with WAN, Router is used.
It updates the Routing Table.
Also provides security features like Firewall.
Routers are networking devices operating at layer 3 or a network layer of the OSI model.
They are responsible for receiving, analysing, and forwarding data packets among the
connected computer networks.
The main function of a router is routing the traffic from one network to the other.
Gateway:
Used in Application Layer.
If Sender and Receivers are using dissimilar protocols then Gateway is used.
A gateway is a network node that forms a passage between two networks operating with
different transmission protocols.
The most common type of gateways, the network gateway operates at layer 3, i.e. network
layer of the OSI (open systems interconnection) model.
The main function of a gateway is to translate one protocol to the other.
NIC:
A network interface card (NIC) is a hardware component without which a computer cannot
be connected over a network.
It is a circuit board installed in a computer that provides a dedicated network connection to
the computer.
It is also called network interface controller, network adapter or LAN adapter.
•
NIC allows both wired and wireless communications.
