Name __________________________________________________________________ Per _______ Electromagnetic Spectrum Foldable Due Friday January 19th Background: Light waves, such as those emitted from the sun, are called electromagnetic waves. These waves are not just visible light waves (i.e.: colors). The electromagnetic spectrum includes seven different types of waves. You will create a foldable booklet to teach yourself and your classmates the differences between these types of waves. Creating the Booklet: Get two sheets of paper, arrange them so they are offset by a ½ inch & fold them in half to make a booklet. (see example) Staple the binding with 3 evenly spaced staples as close to the crease as possible. Booklet Contents: A. Cover Page: Write the title “electromagnetic spectrum”. Draw a picture of the sun. In the seven spaces on the right-hand side, write the names of different types of radiation (waves) in the following order, top to bottom: gamma, X-ray, ultraviolet, visible, infrared, microwaves, radio. (do this on each of the pages “tabs”, see example for clarification) Along the bottom of the page put your first & last name, along with your class period. B. Page 1 On the left-hand side (back of the cover) write “Light waves are transverse waves” along the long edge (turn booklet to so it is wider than it is tall) Under the sentence, draw a generalized diagram of a transverse wave and label the “wavelength”, “crest”, and “trough”. (use up all available space) C. Page 2 On each flap, draw a diagram showing the relative wavelength of each type of wave. D. Page 3 Left hand side (no lines) : o write the definition for frequency of a wave. o write a sentence describing what happens to the number of waves as energy increases. o write a sentence describing what happens to wavelength as energy increases. E. Page 4 On each flap, write the range of wavelengths in meters, for each type of wave. (include units) F. Page 5 (complete pg 6 prior to drawing on page 5.) On the left-hand side, write the title “Everyday Uses of Waves of the Electromagnetic Spectrum” along the long edge (turn booklet to so it is wider than it is tall) Draw and label a picture to represent each type of wave use listed on page 6. G. Page 6 Find at least one use of each type of wave. Write the use of the wave on the lines provided. H. Color your foldable. Be creative!
