WHAT IS SOGIE?
A fluid abbreviation for Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity,
and Expression that refers to all common human
characteristics by explaining the wide spectrum of human
gender and sexuality.
THE FOUNDATION OF SOGIE
SEX
• The biological and physiological
characteristics (chromosomes,
hormones, organs, and other sex
characteristics) that are used by
medical professionals to classify
someone as male, female, or
intersex (a person has a mix of
male and female reproductive
anatomy).
THE FOUNDATION OF SOGIE
GENDER
• The roles, behaviors, expressions,
and identities that are constructed
by the socio-cultural environment.
• Gender is mainly aligned with the
sex of a person.
• Example: A person with a penis is
expected to be a man.
THE GENDERBREAD
PERSON
• A model created by Sam
Killerman that explains the
distinct, disconnected
spectrums of gender and
sexuality.
• The Genderbread has four parts:
Identity, Attraction, Sex, &
Expression.

IDENTITY
● A person’s internal sense of
themselves regardless of their
anatomy.
● A person’s identity may or
may not match their
biological or legal sex.

ATTRACTION/ORIENTATION
● A person’s personal, emotional,
sexual, or romantic attraction to
others that may or may not be
based on their sex and gender.

SEX
● The biological and physiological
characteristics (chromosomes,
hormones, organs, and other sex
characteristics) that are used by
medical professionals to classify
someone as male, female, or
intersex.

● A person’s manifestation of
their gender and sexuality
externally such as through
appearance, mannerism, and
speech.

• It refers to a person who
is personally, emotionally,
sexually, and romantically
attracted to others of their
opposite sex.
•Example: A man who is
attracted to women.
GAY (HOMOSEXUAL MAN)
• It refers to a man who is
personally, emotionally, sexually,
and romantically attracted to other
men.
•Example: A man who is attracted
to men.
LESBIAN
(HOMOSEXUAL
WOMAN)
• It refers to a woman who
is personally, emotionally,
sexually, and romantically
attracted to other women.
•Example: A woman who is
attracted to women.
BISEXUAL
• It refers to a person who is
personally, emotionally, sexually,
and romantically attracted to more
than one gender.
•Example: A man who dates men
and women.
PANSEXUAL
• It refers to a person who is
personally, emotionally, sexually,
and romantically attracted to
either all gender/sex or
regardless of their gender/sex
Example: A woman who dates
someone based on attitudes and
not on gender/sex.
ASEXUAL
• It refers to a person who is not
sexually attracted to anyone.
• An asexual person can still find
someone attractive but not in a
sexual way.

CISGENDER
• It refers to a person whose gender
identity matches the sex that was
assigned at birth
•Example: A person who identify
himself as a man and was assigned
male at birth.
TRANSGENDER
• It refers to a person whose gender
identity and expression do not match
the sex that the person was assigned
and expected at birth.
Example: A person who is assigned
male at birth, and that person
identifies herself as a woman.
GENDER QUEER
• It refers to a person whose gender
identity is neither male nor female,
between, beyond, or a combination
of genders.
AGENDER
• It refers to a person who has no or
refuses to accept gender identities.
GENDER FLUID
• It refers to a person whose
gender identity is fluid or varies
over time.
GENDER NON-BINARY
• It refers to a spectrum of gender
identities that are not exclusive to
masculine and feminine
conventions: outside of the
gender binary.

a combination of masculine
and feminine expressions.
CROSS-DRESSING
• It refers to a person who
dresses up in clothing that is
typically worn by people of
the opposite gender.
•This can be a hobby, a
fantasy, or as part of a
person’s work.

NONCONFORMING
• It refers to a person whose gender
expression does not conform to
societal expectations and norms.

• An umbrella term for sexual and gender
minorities.
• A term to describe an identity that has a
fluid or flexible concept of gender and
sexuality, rejecting social norms; it refers
to intersectionality.
• A community term that refers to people
who are not part of the traditional concept
of gender and sexuality.
QUESTIONING
• It refers to a person who is in the
process of exploring their sexual
orientation or gender identity and
expression.
COMING OUT
• The process of self and public disclosure
of a person’s sexual orientation or gender
identity.
CLOSETED
• It refers to a person who hides their
sexual orientation, gender identity and
expression, and/or other aspects
relative to sexuality and gender.

preferences in sexual intercourses.
• A sexual behavior may be a result of their
own preference, or as a person’s means of
living; it is not anchored to their SOGIE.
